Working on the True Replica cabs and a few people pointed out that their cabs have painted baffles. My '68 straight and slant cabs that we used for our specs did not. I think we need to gather a consensus on which way is more typical, and possibly determine when they started being painted consistently.
I'm going to production on these cabs soon and will need to make a call one way or the other.

Please limit votes to cabs from '68 or earlier. And if you could post actual years in this thread, that data will help as well.

Do I answer for the three cabs I have (late 68, early 69 x2) all 6" logos, all corner triangles all have painted front and edges of speaker cut outs

My '67 is not painted. I know this for a fact as I am currently restoring it, and have it all in pieces and cleaned down to the bare wood. The baffle shows absolutely no signs of ever having been painted.

My two '70 cabs I'm not sure about...would have to look carefully.

If I were to buy one of your cabs would you make me a 69 version with painted baffle? I really don't like the way the none painted baffle looks especially in photos.

My 68 slant is painted. So were my two 69's and 70, before I got offered stupid money for them, and turned them into my wife's engagement ring. If you're going to do it at all, paint the baffles black. Otherwise, like Alex said, they're going to look stupid with lights and photographs.

What I'm trying to get at is, should I overlook that my cabs are not painted and paint the true replica baffles? If we can establish that cabs from '67-68 did sometimes have them painted, then it would be acceptable.

I've been looking through early Hendrix pics and can't tell one way or the other. They certainly don't look stupid in any way. In fact, those pics tend to be THE iconic Marshall shots for me. The ones that make me want plexi era Marshall cabs.

Alex, I'll be happy to paint upon request. But, ultimately I'm looking for enough evidence to make the call on painting all the True Replica cabs.

I have two '68 slant cabs and two '68 straight cabs and all four baffles are raw wood.

My early '66 and early '68 pinstripes have unpainted baffles. My later '68 basketweaves have painted baffles. I think if you're going to use basketweave, a painted baffle looks better.

Looks like Marshall decided to go with painted baffle boards later, and unpainted up till early 68. Of course, as usual, Marshall had extended "overlap" periods with regard to features. I've seen two 68 slants (one being mine, another being a client's I worked on) and they both had painted baffle boards.

I've owned four 69 cabs, multiple 70-74 cabs, all were painted. Go figure...

Yep, good 'ol Marshall. Glad we are establishing a time when they seemed to change over. What if I painted the basketweaves and didn't paint the pinstripes? Except by request.

VG...with certain lighting, the unpainted baffle likely will show throught the ps cloth.

Is there any advantage to having them bare wood? I can think of none.

Era correctness is the only thing I can think of. But it seems to make sense to just paint them all. I don't think anyone is going to be disappointed to find their baffle painted.
