Scummy Dust Caps

Post by JimiJames » Tue Mar 29, 2011 6:21 pm

Jim, you offer a large dust cap. Curious to know why and what effect it has ?
Does it "tighten" it up?

Oh... what is your equivalent to the G12-65 ? The H, M or J75 65.
Also, what is the diffence in effect on a 40oz. to a 50oz.
Thanks in advance.

Ahh...sigh...you have a website with an FAQ page, but does it do any good? Of course not! LOL

Dust Caps:

Dust caps make a tone difference. Most 12" speakers use a small dust cap 2 1/4" wide, but the large 4" wide dust cap (LHDC or G12-65 type) diffuses the highs a bit more, making it great for single coil guitars that have enough low end, but are bright on the treble side, or those who play with high gain (very hard rock/metal players), pedals & fx, etc. It also slightly lowers the bass response, so think of the LHDC model as a 65 hz bass response speaker, sitting right between the 55 & 75 hz models.

J75

40 ounce ceramic, 75hz bass response, 12 inch special design aged cone, small dust cap with vintage correct doping, spider, and voice coil tolerances. A new design that is positioned right in the middle of the M & H series. This speaker has a tighter bass response than the M75, but retains the M75's midrange punch, while offering just a bit more volume and treble bite, but not as much as the H75

Scumback to Celestion Cross-Reference page:
http://www.scumbackspeakers.com/reference.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

M75-HP-LHDC --> G12-65 This is a high powered Greenback, with 65 watts of power handling, and a lowered bass response speaker. This is due to the large dust cap used to tone down the high end slightly, which also beefed up the low end slightly. This speaker was made from 78-82 and had over 40 variations in it's short lifespan, according to reputable sources.

Thanks Jim !
Excellent info.
I was looking for a 2x12 setup for my 100 watter for practice. (Backup for the 4x12)
I appreciate your time, JimmyBoy !

I have an Avatar Vintage closed back 212 loaded with Scumback M75 LHDC 100 watt speakers and it sounds better than the Marshall 1936 that I had that was loaded with G12-65's, it was a 1981 or 1982. My current cab can handle 200 watts and all of my amps sound incredible through these speakers. I even prefer the 212 over my 412 cabs. The speakers are rated at 97dB sensitivity which allows me to turn the amp up a bit more and get into the sweet spot without excessive volume. I wish I had the money to load my 412 with these speakers.

figured I would ask this question here as it has to do with large dust caps, can you put a large dust cap on a v30 to make it sound more like a g12t75 or g12cl80? poor mans way to cut the v30 shrill.

Maybe, but there's the potential of the two dust caps rubbing, causing another separate and nasty noise when they rub.

I wouldn't recommend it, and it won't change your V30's to sound like CL80's. It will just make the speaker sound more rounded in the treble and congested in the midrange due to both dust caps being in use.

I would remove the old/ small one first, my goal of doing this would be to cut the high mids down a bit for a more rounded tone. what size dust cap comes on the g12t75's?

Probably the 4" diameter dust cap the G12-65 and G12-80 use. But since I don't have/own any of the G12T-75's, I can't say for sure.

I ended up trading the v30's for some g12k85's, they sound killer with my amps.
