Post by 72fetter » Tue Sep 27, 2011 12:47 am

i have roadies and am compensating for something. ok now thats taken care of here is my beginnings of a 6x12 orange cab type build as is becoming popular from companies such as emperor and moss. hoping to post as it progresses.

so far 3/4" 12 ply baltic birch. butt joints {no shop with jigs for dovetails or finger joints :( }

up next the bracing and back panels.

I always thought a 6x12 was wired with four 8-ohm speakers series-parallel (for 8 ohms), two 16-ohm speakers wired in parallel (for 8 ohms), then with those two circuits in series for a total of 16 ohms. :shrug:

ah the controversy on how to wire the damn thing lol...hto debate on the 6x12 forums. I am gonna go simple. splitting the cab right down the middle in sets of 3's and wireing the 8 ohm speakers in series parralel with two input jacks. the speakers should be about 10 ohms per side and ill run out of both speaker jacks from thwe amp at 4 ohms.

got a question for you guys though. so far using 3/4" 11 ply baltic birch. bastard is already heavy and I havent put in the baffle and back panel let alone all 6 12"s. I am considering using 1/2" 11 ply for the baffle and back panel. will this be adequate?

5/8 inch minimum on the baffle, especially in a 6x12 scenario. I would recommend that you incorporate a sound post (or two) to share some of the weight between the baffle and the pack panel.

im intending on splitting the whole cab down the middle with a baffle. would this be adequate if i wanted to use the 1/2" or should i still use the 5/8"?

You may be able to make that work, especially if you brace the baffle horizontally as well. I would brace it between each set of two speakers.

Marshall used to make some 4x12s with cabinets that size. That's what I would do if I were you. I know I can get four speakers to work well together, 6 is another story and not worth the hassle in my opinion.

i would prob agree if i had'nt already heard the result of the hassle ;) They arent more popular because they are unecessary and heavy but if you can get over that and give in to your inner child you realize having the biggest one on the block gets all the girls! Only partially kidding but bands i enjoy such as Every Time I Die and The Chariot use them because it just has a resonance that in a live scenario a 4x12 can't compete with in my biased opinion. And i mean come on everybody likes 12's and theres SIX of em :champ:

and by finished I meant stained. still a bit to do but no major mistakes so far. got the speaker baffle cut out and glued in. Went with the 5/8" ply as suggested above. decided to glue it because I like the idea of a solid mounted baffle as opposed to just screwed in. backed the glue up with some 1 5/8" wood screws. only debate I am having now is whether to internally baffle or not. I guess I could just leave it and add one later. A lot of work if i decide to add one later but oh well. i will add two center posts in the meantime. back panel then speakers!!!!!!!

lets ignore the crooked grill cloth (cheap staple gun kept jamming, all effort was thrown out the window) because i am going to redo the grill anyways but holy feces its done! first full volume practice tommorrow (neighbors dont like having their pictures fall off the wall i guess)
