Marshall 2049 2x12 Cab?

Post by OdgeUK » Thu Mar 08, 2012 9:05 am

Just about to purchase a Marshall cab that is a 2x12 with G12-30H in it (not certain if the G12-30H are original). I've not seen one before, it's a tall skinny cab.

My best guess is that it's a Marshall 2049 cab from 1973-1977 but it may be in the later part of production as the livery matches the later JMP style rather than the chequerboard grille cloth of earlier models I've seen.

The cab I'm getting looks like this, but is Orange (?)

From Doyle's Book: the 2049 is "Marshall's tallest 2X12, about 4', designed for 50-watt artist series".

Anyone know anything about these? Particulalry rare or desirable?

if its orange its going to be a desirable cabinet imo. a standard black one would not be though. rare yes but being rare doesnt mean everyone wants one. watch out it hasnt been recovered though, if its mint be suspicious.

i think they made those cab shells with different baffles, so 4x12's and 2x15's can also be found. I owned a 4x12 once and it weighed a tonne. cool cabs though.

a few more:

I didn't buy it in the end. It was a very cool cab but quite tatty (all screws needed replacing, orange tolex quite faded, one or two corner protectors broken). At £115 it was tempting to buy it just to flip it for a small profit but I couldn't be sure how much more it was worth and it's a bloody huge thing to store while I find a local buyer who could pickup.

I don't care for the G12H30 55Hz bass speakers in it either. I had a 4x12 Bass Cab from the 70s with a quad in and didn't like them for guitar.

Anyone think it was worth a lot more than the asking price?

not a lot more. assuming the speakers were blackbacks maybe £80 - £100 each for those if they work properly. maybe £175 for the empty cab with it being orange.

got a link to the item?

I decided to buy it so will hold back any links until I have it, for fear of 'Gazumping'.

Will post some pics of it here, can't beat this 70's mojo!

Well, here it is. This thing is HUGE! About 90cm tall. Looks like width and depth are the same as a regular 4x12.

The speaker codes match and are GJ22, which dates them to July 22nd 1976. Plastic handles.

It is covered in what appears to be original Orange Tolex. At first I thought it had suffered from extreme UV fading, but the tolex that is revealed when you remove the back of the cab is the same colour, suggesting that this may be the original tone of the Orange.

It's almost definitely a 2049 60w Lead Cab made for the Marshall Artiste 50w Head between 1973-1977. Odd that a cab designated as a Lead cab should have 55Hz G12-30H Blackbacks?

The 55hz was marshalls main choice for the H30 I've got a quad in a 76 angled cab.

That looks more like the Fawn or Fleshtone covering they used than orange? also the wiring doesn't look original?

Those huge ports must make a big difference in tone compared to an enclosed or even open backed cab, does seem more akin to being a bass cab ...what does it sound like?

I had a quad in a late 70's 4x12, but it was a Bass Cab (model 1982B).

Haven't had a chance to try it out as yet, it's in storage at work! Can't take it home....!

that colour is called fawn. it looks in nice condition, if it hasnt been recovered. those T1886's are good speakers too. they have a different spider to the T1281 (the 'normal' 55hz G12H marshall use), it has deeper ridges. the kurt mueller cone code for those is 5011 if i remember rightly.
