I have a peavey classic 30, a peavey 5150 combo and will have some type of 50W Marshall clone in the next 6 mos. I play mostly classic rock, a little blues and love the earlier pre-1984 van halen guitar tone. I've pretty much decided on trying scumbacks...may even have Jim build me a 212. I know I want at least one 65W M75. What should I use for the Second speaker? It seems boring to use two of the same! Maybe even makes the tones more of a one trick pony??
I have a 112 open back avatar with a Celestion g12h30 and I run a wgs green beret gb copy onboard my classic 30. The wgs is probably the wrong speaker for the c30 combo...absolutely no bass and just seems flubby. The avatar cab sounds decent enough but maybe too trebley? Anyway, would really appreciate some thoughts. Thinking of the following sb's to team up with the m75:
H75
H75 LHDC
Thanks!

Myself, I'd go with the H75 LHDC, I like less top end, but I think the H75 is the more popular choice.
The Green Beret is definitely lacking bass in a C30, but it smooths out the highs nicely. What's really nice in the Peavey is the new Scumnico.

I cant begin to say how amazing a 4x12 sounds with a quad of BM75 LHDC. If you're looking for that early VH sound, I prefer those speakers with my 12xxx even more than my M75 cab. The blackback clones just seem to breathe a bit more at the highs and lows and give that perfect 80's scooped sound while still maintaining that perfect Marshall growl when driven.
I've not tried them mixed in the same cab, but separately the M75 and the BM75 LHDC would cover classic rock and the VH thing very nicely.

I have mixed and matched many speakers and in the end I found you lose more than you gain mixing contrasting speakers. I'd go with either a M75 large dust cap or a M55 either in 65 watts of the M75-65w.

I asked Jim himself about mixing small and large dust caps in the same cab, and he said it the mix would sound weird. He doesn't recommend that with any amps. I don't know if it is still the case if you put those in different cabs though.
From research I have done, closed back cabs go great with all M75's and open back ones with the M/H mix. If you play heavy, high gain and detuned stuff, the M/J mix may work best, again said the man himself.
Don't hesitate to shoot Jim an email. He is prompt and very helpful.

Agree 100%.BoogieEngineer wrote:From research I have done, closed back cabs go great with all M75's and open back ones with the M/H mix. If you play heavy, high gain and detuned stuff, the M/J mix may work best, again said the man himself.
I had an M/H mix in a closed back context and much preferred it when putting into a THD 212 slightly open back cab.
A pair of Ms in a closed back scenario does sound killer.
Not too sure about the M/J setup, but the J is a great speaker for higher gain stuff.
