Do these cones look original?
Thinking about buying this '70's cab, do the cones look like originals or re-cones?
Thanks

Re: Do these cones look original?
They would fit for the style of the chassis (hammered paint finish, frame codes and black backs).
Mid late 70s I guess?

Codes on speakers are JL5, September '78 5th day?
Here are a couple more.

What do you think a fair price would be for this?
Thanks

I did buy the cab. They all have the 1777, but three are in one font style, and one is different. I think you can see it in the pics.
The odd one is third pic down.

1777 cones are right for blackbacks for sure.
does it sound good? - that should be all that matters (unless you paid an insane amount of money for vintage speakers of course).

It sounds okay, I am currently playing through GT12-75's. It sounds very middy to me, with less bass comparably. I am going to see if it is wired correctly today.
I paid $650 for it based on the questionable "1777"'s on the cones.

Re: Do these cones look original?
The speakers have clearly been out of the cab and rewired at some stage. Normally the speakers are arranged with the solder tabs vertically arranged in the centre of the cab so the harness is Y-shaped. Black/red wire is usual (same as heaters I think) although 71-73 ish there were some wired with blue/brown wire - maybe someone else could be more definitive. The three code stamps in your pics all look correct.
I agree with HTH - do they sound good to you?
Traditionally I have always preferred G12H30 speakers. I mainly gigged with some Blackbacks in a straight 4x12 with a metal panel 50w, great low end and certainly cut through that mid range sound clutter on stage (second guitar/keys etc), often I would be encroaching on into the bass players territory!
The G12M Blackbacks are definitely softer and more middy (nicer speaker than the 'ok' 75s, IMO) but you need to crank the amp to get it to sing and create speaker distortion to get the best out of them, mainly emphasising upper mids, and you have to let the bass player provide the low end.
The Ms often sound better to me jamming at home, less abrasive and if you get your amp and guitar settings right you will find their sweetspot.
No idea on price but those late 70s black cloth cabs can be got for 350-400GBP although one nutter has had this going for years - increasing the price http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Marshall-Vint ... 2327ed3343

Re: Do these cones look original?
Thanks for the info. Right now I am playing them at home at normal volume. I am using two amps in a stereo/ detuned setup. I had been using a '70 and '72 Superlead until the tranny burned in the '70 (see my posts in transformer section). Now using a Metro 50w Plexi clone until its fixed.
Side by side, the -75 cab is much fuller than the Blackback cab. Makes me wonder if it is wired out of phase or something?

Re: Do these cones look original?
I'd say that is a very good price for the cab and speakers. I do see a rewire in there and at least one of the speakers have been turned.
