Speaker shootout clips teaser

I spent the day yesterday in the studio recording several quads of G12M type speakers. I have lots of HD video and audio tracks to pour through, edit and compile into a video. But, in the mean time here's a teaser, audio only clip:

This is the Doug Rappaport DI guitar clip reamped through a Metropoulos 50 watt with '68 era lead specs. You will hear 5 sets of speakers, each were loaded into my '67 Marshall straight cab. All captured with a Royer SF-12 stereo ribbon mic about 4 feet in front of the cab.

The speakers, in order:

original G12M "25" watt stickered M's. Dated June 28, 1967. Original 003 cones.

ASW Crossroads

Celestion Greenback reissue 25W

Celestion heritage G12M 20W

Scumback M75 PVC


Interesting to hear the results. No clear winner or loser here whatsoever.


Amp settings were: vol I 10, treble 6, middle 10, bass 4, presence 5.

Vol I 8, treble 6, middle 5, bass 2, presence 4 The amp has a switchable bright cap and it was out of the circuit.

I know it's recorded 4 feet away, but since you were mic'ing a Quad out in the open which Quad did you have the most fun with... My guess; The preRola's, but weren't you nervous (with louder volumes) ? Balls o' steel, man !

Very nice clips ! They sound all pretty good although I have my personal winners. I liked the 1967 original the best on both clips. Then 25w greenback (which kinda surprized me) followed by scumback in George's clip and vice versa in Pete's clip. I liked the ASW Crossroads speakers the least on both clips.

They could all suit someone based on personal taste. For me, I didn't prefer the ASW, or Heritage. On the DR clip, the other 3 seemed more up my alley. For the Thorn style, the reissue Greenback didn't seem to handle the bite as well as the original, or the Scumback. Maybe I'm imagining, but I thought the 67 may have had just a touch more authority with the bite than the Scumback. Either way, those 2 sounded great for those going for non ear piercing bite - Like me.

nice comparison clips. be good to hear a slightly later pre-rola quad in there if you have any. 68 onwards.

June 67 is surely 20 watt/white paper former period? the later ones have a bit more body/warmth to the tone to my ears.

Thanks guys, glad you like the clips. The results were pretty interesting. Something about that cab makes any speaker sound it's best. There is something musical about it.

By all accounts those '67 era greenbacks are more scooped and slightly raspy at times. I choose them because they are original to the cab and sound terrific in there. I do have '69 era GB's too, but I would have ran out of of time at the studio and not been able to test them. I'm already planning our next round of clips, I'll try to work that into the mix.
