Marshall Checkerboard 4x12 Cabinet caster replacement
I dug up an old thread regarding this topic but it was LOCKED so I couldn't post my question in it. So here goes ...
Rather than drop the $80+S&H for the Marshall replacement casters I opted to buy the Fender 2" casters with socket (tubesandmore.com part# P-HW01S) hat many of you are using as replacements. However, I'm concerned about drilling out the hole to accomodate the new caster base shaft because on all four holes you can see at least half of the hole is blocked by either the fron baffle or rear panel. I'm worried about the drill bit eating the grill cloth and ripping the through. Anyone else have this situation?
Thanks
M

You do have to drill into the baffle board on the bottom for the caster sockets. Make sure you have a sharp or new drill bit and you'll be fine. I've never ripped a cloth yet.

I would not recommend drilling a vintage cab. surely the modern marshall castors with the black plastic base are not THAT expensive, and should fit fine? or wait for some metal homas on ebay?

Re: Marshall Checkerboard 4x12 Cabinet caster replacement
To the OP: The modern Marshall castor bases are weak. They will break (had it happen) and the mounting screws can be ripped out if you hit a crack in the sidewalk wrong (had that happen, too).
Marshall used to drill through the cab into baffle boards this way from the factory when they used their "pin" style casters in the 60's-70's. The Fender replacements are a hair larger, have a stronger base, and are the same length. I've retrofitted dozens of old Marshall cabs this way without any issues.
If you need some help, or pics of the old cabs, feel free to email me. I had the pics loaded into this thread below, but it's Easter and I don't have the time to rename all the pics to match the thread since I canceled my old amp site.

Re: Marshall Checkerboard 4x12 Cabinet caster replacement
FYI ... I used a 3/4" Forstner drill bit to open the holes up for the casters. Worked perfectly. Just a reminder to anyone else doing this, open the back up and cover the speakers with a rag or something. You'll have to vacuum out the cab afterwards because of the wood shavings.
I also painted the Fender casters and bases with satin black. Looks pretty sharp. I masked off the caster shafts and used a rubber band around the gap where the bearings are exposed.
