Which speakers for a Bassman 5F6A 2x12" open back clone?

Post by jimmy74 » Fri May 03, 2013 7:12 am

Hi I'm currently trying to pinpoint the right sort of speaker which would suit both amplifier power and music genre. The amplifier is a Bassman 5F6A clone and the cab is a 2 x 12" open back combo. The music genre is garage & punk, with a telecaster and obviously a drive pedal infront. I was leaning towards the Celestion G12M + G12H pair but heard that these may not be sufficient in power rating.

Anyone know whether this is true? And if so what would be the your suggestion?

thanks

Are you suggesting 2 x G12H's?

I'm not sure exactly which Bassman clone you're getting, but a client had us build him a Bassman style 2x12 with an oval open back. He went with the H75-LD (heavy 50 oz magnet, large dust cap, 75 hz cone) 65w 16 ohm speakers wired in parallel to an 8 ohm total load.

He tested it out today and was having that big grin on his face before he took it home. His amp maker said it would be 50w clean and around 75-80 cranked wide open, so you'll need two 30w speakers at a minimum to feel safe IMO.

Good luck with whatever you decide to go with.

Thanks for the info very helpfull indeed, the amp itself follows ceriatones layout, the transformers are generic though. The cab is a stripped PA 2x12 which had a pair of old speakers which I have no idea what power rating they are, and a SS amplifier. The back pannel has been removed and cutout to make the cab openback. The cab itself is 90x60x30cm so there's plenty of room in there and we've fitted the amp in as a classic top mount. So would a pair of Creambacks be a better choice? Maybe a G12M65 and a G12H75?

thanks

Brian Setzer runs V30s with his bassmans, fwiw. Ampegs, Twins & Marshalls are classic punk arsenal. I'd get a pair of H75s, or an H & a Blackback M. 65 watters and call it a day!
