The Celestion G12T-75's through the years.

Post by Majorlead78 » Sun Jun 09, 2013 1:16 am

When it comes to the Celestion G12T-75's, opinions vary on this speaker.

Three part question. What are anyone's thoughts on the white labeled models from the 1980's (with & without the speaker vent)?

The black sticker model from the early 90's? This posting was from May 1, 2011 by Amazingmare.

And finally, the mid 90's version to early 2000's? The English made ones before they were made in China.

From 1997 to mid 1998, I had a mid 90's Marshall JCM 900 1960A cab (I'll say around 1995 or '96) loaded with the current G12T-75's. Needless to say, I didn't like them. I later traded it for a 1980 Hiwatt SE-4123 (the front loaders). Although I thought it had Fanes in it, the speakers turned out to be Celestion G12T-75's from 1989 (like the ones in the first link). Surprisingly, they sounded better than the ones from the mid 90's Marshall cab.

I wonder why these sounded better than the later ones. I took the '89 G12T-75's out of my Hiwatt cab, but I still have them.

I have an 80's marshall jcm800 bass 4x12 loaded with 4 G12T 75s like your first pic. These speakers are not bad they are quite aggressive metal sounding with a vintage marshall but i quite like them. They are punchy with bass guitar and sound great with my sound city 120 and unlike modern 75s they compress a hell of a lot more.

I loaned my 120 to a friend I told him that amp was off it's rocker and it screamed i told him what cab i used it was an 80's jcm800 bass 4x12. He played that amp with a modern marshall 4x12 with 75s and it just sounded dead with none of that drive i was describing.

The 80's 75ts are malmsteen's fav speaker gotta say these speakers sound their best with 2204s, 2203s and the rest of the jcm800s because that's the amps they were voiced around or was it vice versa.

I find superleads and superbasses work best with G12M or H

johniss0001, that's funny you say that about using the G12T-75's for bass guitar. I have a buddy of mine who's a bassist in a Cream cover band called "Tales of Cream" & he said the G12T-75's sound great for bass. PLUS, you mentioned the Sound City 120. Now I'll have to fire that head up for I've haven't played it in years! LOL

At one point, I was on the verge of selling the G12T-75's until I saw a posting where Jim Seavall of Scumback Speakers said something about these speakers in the Rig-Talk forum which changed my mind:

"For G12M/M75's, the top wiring setup (Parallel/Series) has a touch more lows/low mids, whereas the bottom wiring setup (Series/Parallel) adds more mids for the G12H30/H75/H55 type speakers."

http://www.rig-talk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=74400" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

When I read that, I was thinking about throwing the G12T-75's in my '79 Marshall 1960B cab, go with the Parallel/Series wiring & be done with it. It's currently empty at the moment.

And yes, you are right johniss0001, the G12T-75 is the speaker Yngwie Malmsteen uses in his Marshall cabs. We can't forget that.

my jcm800 bass 4x12 is a 1935 cab and it's on it's original speakers. marshalls are confusing they did the 1982 cabs in the 80's for the other amps before being upgraded to 4x100 watt cones.

They do work for bass quite well the 75s not sure i would like to use modern ones as they may go pop...
