What speakers for 2x12 paired with 70 JMP50 clone?

Post by 6adam7 » Fri Jun 16, 2017 5:43 am

Hi guys,

I have a 70 spec JMP 50 small box head wth a bunch of good stuff in it - Marstan trannies, sozo's, xf2 Mullards and a Tungsram in v1...
I also run it with the Alex attenuator on the -6db setting all the time - just bloody well have too....
I have a 1960B cab which had 69 pre Rola greenbacks in it and it now has the Weber stan spec 1225's...
Sounds pretty darn glorious with either speaker to my old ears - ol' greens sounding the sweeter but with bass a bit mushy, Webers tighter n maybe brighter which would be down to age I'm thinking and obviously different cones etc..
I have a 1936 2x12 ( a good ply one) that I wanna start using so what speakers would you guys recommend to keep me in the ballpark??
I want to stay low SPL cause, well, did I say this things F****** loud??....so, was thinking the 12m Heritage or just plain reissues but have no experience with what to expect with the bass response in the 1936?
Have also thought about higher wattage stuff like Creambacks, Lynchbacks, Legacy's etc but wondering about how they would react, as using attenuator they wouldn't be getting too pushed?...
Also using this amp as a pedal platform so running it rather clean - around 3 on the dial...

Would think about Scumbacks but as I'm in Australia they would cost me a kidney to get over here.....
Would really value your user opinions ( and I know you guys just love talkin bout this shit... 8) )

Steve

USPS has really raised shipping everywhere outside the USA, over 34% in the last two years. A pair of speakers shipped to Australia now is around $145 plus the speakers, paypal fees, insurance, etc.

I'd recommend the M75-PVC 65w speakers for you, but it's $484 (if the USPS site is correct on it's estimation costs) for a pair to go to OZ. Depends on the zip code, but that's pretty close.

Thanks for that Jim, I would've chosen the same I think....and damn USPS...postage is totally crazy these days from the states...
Jim, calling on your wealth of experience, do you think that seeing as Im running the Amp pretty clean, - it's probably punching out its 50 watts where I'm running it AND I'm attenuated 6db all the time, that it would be possible to run 25 Watters?.... And if so what could I expect from bass response taking into account the internal volume of the 1936?
I can remember you commenting somewhere on here about OS 2x12's and a bigger magnet needed ( something like that)
IS a 1936 considered oversized??...

The 1936 is a smaller OS 2x12, IMO. Generally they need to have more upper mid kick to counteract the bigger bass response from the volume of the 2x12 cab. Towards that they'd need something like an M75 & J75 mixed, or an M/H combo.

With the attenuator at -6db, you should be good with running two 25w speakers, but there are no guarantees. The 25w speakers you have should be good with a 50w amp around 4-5 MAX volume without the attenuator, but depending on age, condition, etc that may not be the case.

Tough to evaluate the speaker history and how it was treated before you got it unless you bought it new. Wish I could be more help than that.

Thanks again Jim, I think I'm off the idea of a couple of 25 Watters now after hearing that...
Not much choice for me here in Oz, apart from Celestions so, think I'm gonna take a punt on Lynchbacks (!??!)
Pro's are wattage, low SPL, 1777 cones (??) and the idea that they could be a bit ' Fane-ish '... Something different.... And if there's anyone who wants to talk me out of them please!, I'm all ears... :?:
Not much on here or other forums really about these, apart from the metal guys ( which I ain't) but I have read a couple that called it a pretty good all rounder..
Don't like the sound of the Creambacks-reviews are very mixed... AND I just don't want the higher sensitivity stuff like H mags etc, as I really am fighting volume....
Jim, If I was a yank, I'd snap yours up...

I have a lot of players using my speakers in OZ, you might hit up one of their online forums for more info, or see if there are any used out there for sale. Good luck!

two 25w speakers sound risky. Two 30w speakers are better but need not be safe in the long run

Thanks Roe, yeah, I am leaning towards higher wattage even though I'm attenuated... But I am using dirt pedals and fuzz so....
I am also using analog & digital delays so thus me running the amp pretty clean and wanting a nice clean sound....
Have checked out the M Creambacks but, to me they just sound a bit odd in comparison demos, with a 25watter greenie just sounding so much more open and that's my reference...( does anyone else think this?... Or is it just my own abused ears?)
Thus thinking about the lynchback - I'm not a shredder or metal-er and barely know who Goerge Lynch is - I dunno, it just sounds, interesting....
Roe, I wouldn't expect you, having seen about a 1000 of your posts and being pretty sure you have more classic tastes ( AC/DC etc) would have any experience with them?...

Some love the Lynchback, but I haven't really tried them myself. I often prefer the low watt speakers, but keep high watt speakers in a 2x12 so that I can gig bigger amps w/o 4x12s and attenuators. The g12-35xc (42oz, 100db, 35w) looks interesting but it sounds closer to a g12H than the scumback J75 (40oz, 98db, 30/65w). Even the V-type appears to be a decent compromise between a greenback and a vintage 30

Nah, get some Webber Pre Rola spec 25 watt clones. You will be the happiest guitar player on this forum.

Thanks Roe, yeah, tired of lugging around my quad, thus looking for something to fill a 2x12...both for my back and hopefully lose a little volume... Love my Alex, but I find, anything below -6db and I start losing dynamics, so I want to try and keep it there....
So hopefully losing 2 speakers, I'll lose a few db as well?
Actually found a cool Pete Thorn soundclip of the M75 65 watter vs Lynchback ( you've probably all heard it).... And it's a great comparison clip - not for ' this ones better' but just for sonic differences....
Thanks Axeman!, but I already have a quad of them!... More blackback than prerola to my ears but damn cool all the same... Unless you are talking Legacies?... Which I havent tried but have heard clips of..
