My First Build... what fun and what tone!!!

Post by TheOuvs » Thu Oct 21, 2010 11:58 pm

This is my first attempt at building an amp, I have done one Montey Allums pedal mod but nothing like this. I can't take all the credit though... I would like to thank everyone at Metro Amp, without them and their kind and always generous help (and sometimes hands on, solder joints can be a bitch) it wouldn't have been possible. George runs a wonderful company and is a class act!

By the way, I took this amp into my local Guitar Center and the assistant manager, who is a good friend was blown away by this amp. The tone on this thing is out of sight!!

Also, thanks to the many people on this forum that helped in ways you'll never know about!!! I can't wait to do this again.

Ok, I've been enjoying my new amp for about a day now and every once in awhile I get this loud hiss that comes and goes. It doesn't seem to affect the tone, but you just have this hiss sound over it. If I turn the stand by off it goes away again for awhile. It very intermittent.

Any Ideas???

Intermittent hiss maybe a dry joint on the B+ (power supply rail) - those grey MO 8k2 and 10k droppers although the hiss from a vintage amp with this problem is usually from the old carbon comps that were used so not necessarily the issue in yours. Nevertheless an intermittent problem like this on a newly built amp that otherwise works well will be a cold joint where you are not always getting signal passing properly, and occasionally getting a higher resistance to (or in some circumstances complete loss of) the electronic signal.

Usual method is to go over every solder joint and inspect it carefully, if any doubt reflow the joint with the soldering iron on the correct temperature and make sure the solder flows into the joint evenly.

A hiss or whooshing noise maybe a poor preamp tube.

Thanks Neil,

I have checks the solder joints and a couple were suspect, re-flowed them and am now testing. We'll know soon.

Thanks,
Kris

All is well... hum is gone and the amp sounds great. Been playing for days and no signs of the hum returning.
