impedance switch problem??

Post by noland0 » Thu Dec 30, 2010 11:36 pm

:help: Got another problem.. i think :?

Finished the amp last night and was doin some checking of solder joins, continuity and such and found that i would get continuity between the center lug on the impedance switch and all three of the other lugs, 4, 8, 16 ohm (when it was switched to 16). This can't be right?!

Uh and when i plug in my dummy load (2 x 3.9ohm resistors 100watt), at the ground and tip of the lug i get continuity when i plug it in.. is this right? are the tip and ground connected on the speaker jacks (or is this a consequence of the problem above)?

Hmm

Help would be greatly appreciated

Both of those are normal. The continuity you're getting on the switch is between the windings of the OT itself. They have such low resistance that the meter can read continuity. The continuity with the dummy load is normal too. Think of the speaker jack as continuing a "loop" from the OT. You can even plug in just a speaker cable and you'll get continuity between the tip and sleeve of the other end of the cable.

Ahh, of course!

I was reading some other posts about this problem, but i think they were getting cont. when the lugs were unsoldered.

Thanks toner.

Alright i'll start the testing stage tomorrow; jan 1st 2011, woo!

Happy NY :)
