It is almost flat. Not much was needed to frazzle it up a tad.

+1 on the 6 band adding to the alka seltzer.

the scientific method demands that we introduce a control. is it possible to record this exact setup with a different super lead of the same basic spec?

I can do that Rob. I get home next Wednesday and will do apples to apples with the Iskra/Mustard 100 watt. I think the only difference is a 47K NFB resistor but otherwise the same spec amp. I can even put a 100K if I need.

For, what is vvr?

So I tried it. At 70 and higher on the dial...it seems to act as a high band pass filter. Below 70 seemed to tame the highs the closer to zero it got, reducing volume in the process. For me it was worth trying out but I prefer my single variac rig. It did get me thinking about getting a longer speaker cable...say 100 feet and if it would have a similar effect.

Well at least you tried it but, you are only talking about frequency responses. I'm not discounting the importance of the EQ slope or right balances of lows, mids, highs, etc. but it's the "other noise" that I listen for, which I find the magic in. The complexity and smear of harmonics that comes from the crackling frying of eggs kind of thing. This is now known as the Alka-Seltzer effect BTW, thanks to rgalpin  The Alka-Selter effect is what gives the distortion it's unique character and a musically rich grind. Tough to put in words but it's a different way of listening past just the frquencies, or post production processes, etc. I think the WACF album probably highlight this best.
Turn off the power switch while your playing, and keep playing as the amp dies down. That's the effect. 8)

I hear what you're saying...and I'm glad it's working for you. All I'm saying is...with my ears and my current rig ('68 Superbass, LP Goldtop '57 reissue, 1960 4X12 with scumbacks G12m copies) I prefer my straight tone at all volumes. I would encourage others to try it too and decide.

Here's the other amp. Same short clip but with the Iskra/Mustard 100 watt build with ****** Trannies. I even swapped out and put the same tubes in so this amp is running as a 50 watt. The only difference in the circuits is this amp has a 47K resistor in the NFB. The first amp has a 100K. All else is apples to apples in every way, with two different amps. TWO VARIAC'S I TELL YA.

EDIT: Actually, this amp's rectifier is not a GZ-34. :stars:

No tube rectifier on the 100 watter. Vintage Tungsram diodes.

i think this second one might be even closer. it's warmer. GREAT!!

this whole thing makes me want to doublecheck and make sure our ears and brains are not adding in stuff because of the psycho stuff that goes on when you hear ed in one ear and jnew in the other.

is there some way to get these amps playing over top of a clip without ed in there too?

which brings me to a question i've been meaning to ask. does anyone have access to good VH tracks with the guitar eliminated. ?? either derived from iso tracks or just a home made backing track?

i went looking for this the other day on the net and was surprised NOT to find anything...

??

I can see that us tail chasing old timers get it, but I just can't get over the lack of fan fair here. As far as I'm concerned this is truly the first time I have heard Ed's early tone actually duplicated, it fucking uncanny! :champ:
