it sure seems that way George - but man ya get what pay for huh?
i may start out with jj/tesla' and then move on to the big boys.my quest here is to learn as well as build and with that in mind i would have something to compare to once i got these big bottle 6ca7's!
still thinking about it though - we shall see

wired wrong? impossible! lol i hear ya there George!VelvetGeorge wrote:You sure do.
Definately start with the JJ's. Just in case something is wired wrong. It would suck to damage an expensive set out tubes because of a silly oversight.
George
jj's all across 12ax7 for V1, V2, V3? OR DO I want a different tube for V3?

This is very true. I did Ralle's specs and it sounded great with my JB, G12M reissues, and EH preamp tubes (I had them and didn't buy them). Then I stumbled apon some vintage Blackback G12Ms, Got a Tom Holmes pickup, Mullards, Bugle Boys, and Brimars, and the tone totally changed.texwest wrote:This forum is so cool. Here's something I've been thinking about for awhile.
Ralle is using different tubes than Eddie- should be 6ca7, Reissue g12m- should be g12h, and some different filtering if we believe ******'s specs. It seems that Ralle may have kept tweaking his set up until he had it tuned to his liking. His set up is very similar but does have some differences. I guess I'm just curious if anyone has yet proposed that there maybe more than one way to get EVH tone? Wht do you guys think of this? Maybe we all need to tweak our set up for our own touch and style of playing?
Wes
The fundemental tone changed for the better so I started changing the circuit unitil ... it was pretty much a stock '68 again!
This just confirmed that Ralle has REALLY good ears and that he really tweaked around his particular rig.
One of the big things I noticed was that the JB is really bass shy compared to something like the '59. When I switched to the vintage speakers, tubes, and lower output pickup, the tone got overly thick and woofy.
With the '68 setup I'm using a Bugle Boy in V1 and Phillips/Mullards in V2 and V3. I also picked up some JAN Sylvania 12AX7s and they do sound really good ... less midrange like I hear on VH1
Gear:
'74 Super Lead rebuilt with '68 metro board and old stock mustards.
'73 Super Lead
'68 Basketweave with pre rola G12Ms

interesting post gnugear
im not so much looking for "the" tubes for my build as much as im looking for a good setup to " start" with. i know later i will invest $ in "the" tubes. im just needing decent ones to start off with.
I am starting with ralle spec - wish i knew what he used exactly.
so at this point...pretty much set on the jj el34... or the EH 6ca7
preamp are either sovtek lps, EH, , JJ/Tesla 12AX7/ECC83S or JJ/Tesla ECC803 S ,- as George states in the store he likes to use one of these in V1.
if i cant find them locally today i will place an order with George
cant wait to hear this fucker!
p.s i was cleaning up my emails and came across one to you via an ebay add - i wrote to you after i was impressed about what you knew about the circuit and what you had done to this marshall you were selling. after you wrote back and recommened metroamp is where it all started for me on my building amps! - thanks bro!
