EVH and the Fernandes sustainer?

Post by Bluesgeetar » Mon Mar 02, 2009 1:19 pm

Fernandes says EVH uses the sustainer. Curious as to where he uses this thing in songs? Anyone know what songs he is is using this thing? I was gonna get one for that Schon "Only the young" tone. Noticed they said EVH uses one. :?

I'm not sure if he has used it on any studio tracks, but he sure used the hell out of it and a wah during the '04 tour.

Pretty sure he's been using it since the VH III album.

Both on that album and touring for III.

The only time I didn't see it was on the last 'reunion' tour.

My guess is that he's put it down (thank gawd....)

I believe he also used on Humans Being, the song from Twister. If memory serves that was 1995. His use of it on the 2004 tour was distracting IMHO.... Thank god he didn't use it like that on the most recent outing with DLR.

Definitely on Me Wise & Humans Being! And I think in places on those 3 new (bad) songs with Sammy in 2004?

What was that big wiring harness/bracket Ed had on his guitars on the VHIII tour? I thought that was pretty ugly and distracting....

I hate when he uses that thing. Hope it doesn't find it's way into any of his new guitars!!

Question - is the Sustainer typically used mainly for making long notes in solos, or can it be used somewhat turned down to give an overall sustaining quality to a guitars sound? (chords and leads)

Does Ed just use it for solos, or does he leave it on for the full song? Does he do that in "Humans Being"??

For example, suppose I want to play with a clean "Fender Twin" type of sound... but I want to get the kind of sustain you might expect from a cranked Marshall/OD pedal, without the overdriven sound? Can the Sustainer do that?

yes it can do that. If you really wanna see why the sustainer can be good check Steve Vai on youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KEiaZaIvBUM

Thanks Santi - I guess the neck "humbucker" on Vai's JEM is the Sustainer? (or is it the middle single coil?)

There's also a bunch of videos on the Fernandes site:

One more question for anyone: I see that the sustainer can be turned off and used as a pickup itself... if so, can the "single coil Sustainer" be used in the neck position to get close to an SRV tone? (obviously w/o sustain)
