So in the interest of satisfying my curiosity and providing some solid info, I set up a plexi channel in the sim to get an idea of what the voltages would be like at the cathode follower output with the Jose Master installed without the zeners influence. With the gain pot set at 10% which is about 1 volt RMS on the output of the pot, the signal at the output of the CF was 42 VAC RMS. More than enough to be clipped by 20 volt zeners. I then setup the same channel in my test amp and the results were very similar on the scope. The zeners give a decent amount of clipping even with very modest gain settings. If I were to use it in an amp I would definitely put it on a switch. Curiosity satisfied.briango wrote:Seems there is enough signal on mine to drive it.

Re: Mark Cameron Jose master volume schematic??
when i tested it in an amp the effect was a smoothing so to speak. it almost sounded like an over drive cutting off highs and lows. oddly enough it seemed to be taking away some of the hair on the sound. not really adding any gain.Groovenut wrote:So in the interest of satisfying my curiosity and providing some solid info, I set up a plexi channel in the sim to get an idea of what the voltages would be like at the cathode follower output with the Jose Master installed without the zeners influence. Mark if you installed it like your layout with one zener and one rectifier, that makes sense as it would only clip half of the wave form yielding more even harmonics.

FWIW I've got 1N4745 zener diodes written down on a old schematic I got from someone.

Re: Mark Cameron Jose master volume schematic??
FWIW, I personally dont like this MV. It messes with the input impedance of the tonestack in a negative way when it's turned down, shunting highs to ground and boosting sub low frequencies. In certain circuits you may not even be able to tell, but anything with a decent amount of bass content is going to be effected. It's a fine place to put the zeners if you want a clipper in the circuit, but I prefer the MV to be post TS. I suppose by altering the cap value attached to the cf, you could minimize the low frequency effect but you still have to deal with the way it effects the functionality of the ts.

Re: Mark Cameron Jose master volume schematic??
also a better way to wire a gain pot that would blow your mind gain and feel wise.

Thanks for the insight Jerry...I'll keep tinkering with that gain pot. I have to get some clips made of what I have been working on lately. I think it sounds pretty cool.

Re: Mark Cameron Jose master volume schematic??
if its too hot you can tame it with a small series res or a 1 meg from wiper to ground. If 1 meg is already there try two of em or like a single 470k experiment a little. You can play arond with values to of that cap.briango wrote:Thanks for the insight Jerry...I'll keep tinkering with that gain pot. I have to get some clips made of what I have been working on lately.
