Don't forget Ralle uses a JB pick up, that is really not the same as what Eddy used........Ralle adapted and fine tune his amp to make it sound like VH..........JJtubes? Not Sylviana, etc....etc....so those little details got adjusted by increasing/decreasing capacitance among other things etc...etc....Ralle has great hears to do that...........

It's almost as if Ralle was experimenting with the Values in ******'s description of EVH's amp, but had to add the .68uf to the presence to make up for the reissues. The end goal tone being the same, just 2 different paths to get there. So if you have RI Greenbacks try Ralle spec, but if you have the real deal 12h30 Pre Rola or Heritage go with Cerrems 1.1k rks too will add to your gain.

Hmm, my ears told me the opposite, that the 820 had a warmer sound, since the bypass cap was not as effective with the lower value resistor, despite the higher frequency shelf of the cap/resistor combo. The bigger the cathode resistor, the more the signal would rather go through the cap if it can, so your bypass cap's gain boost is more apparent........another of those balancing act things we run up against.

changing v1b from 820 to 2.7k
- 820 will have more distortion in the higher freqs- thinner overall
2.7 will be thicker -not as much distortion - alitte warmer / fatter sounding

Hey Mark your only rebiasing your pre amp tube with different resistor value there, from 820ohms to 1.1k you'll get a smoother result....try it and less us know.........

i plan on trying the 1.1k very soon with my findings as of lately i even wonder what it would sound like with 1.1k on v1b and a 2.7k on v2a.5150loveeddie wrote:Hey Mark your only rebiasing your pre amp tube with different resistor value there, from 820ohms to 1.1k you'll get a smoother result....try it and less us know.........

V1----> 330uf/1.1k, .68uf/2.7k
V2------>330uf/1.1k
.02 after the first Stage
Slope /Treb 56k/250
Mixer 470k/500pf
I'd like to try some 1k, or 1.1k cement resisters in those spots.

Here's my observations of the resistor - I think this is way more important than any of the above components you guys mentioned (ie. filtering, cathode resistors).

is it rediculous to put variable resistors in positions on the preamp tubes for fine adjustment? i used to do that back in the late 70's.
