REFERENCES FOR RALLE's VH/AMP/SPECS/GEAR/SET-UP, etc.....

Post by 5150loveeddie » Thu Nov 03, 2005 3:16 pm

The info is all over the forums now, so any links, or a nice resume of his amp/gear/diagram/set up/pics, etc... right here so we don't have to dig in hundred of pages on information!!!!

No partial info here please!!! Only the "FULL" and "EXACT" stuff please

We could place this as a sticky also maybe?

Merci Beaucoup!!!

Just to quickly reitterate since this is an EVH Thread. Bainzy your values seem to have some Ralle values throwen in

Circuit Board Parts List

Resistors:

820ohm (2) (Two accounts say these drifted to just over 1k (1.1k). Ive used 1k here before (on cerrums suggestion) and it definitely sounds smoother but its very sublte.

2.7k ohm
68k ohm (4)
100k ohm (4)
470k ohm (2)
56k ohm
1M ohm (2)
470 ohm
82k ohm
10k ohm 1/2w (1)
10k ohm 2w (3)
47k ohm 2w (2)
8.2k ohm 2w
15k ohm
27k ohm 2w

Capacitors:

100pf
250pf
500pf

.022uF (5)
.1uF (3)
.68uF (1)
10uF (2)
330uF (2)

20uF 450v axial filter capacitor (2)
This is a Ralle value. EVHs supposedly was 16. Their close enough.

100uF 450v/500v axial filter capacitor (2)

50uFx50uF 450v/500v axial filter capacitor (2) - jumpered to make 100uFIf this is the screens filter then this also is a Ralle value. The 'alleged evh value was 32+32 in series or 16u. The can on the chassis was supposed to be 32u. Ralle has his at 100 IIRC

Diodes

5 x 1N4007 diode

also, on the presence pot there's a .68uF cap on the middle lug and a 4.7k ohm resistor on the ground lug (the lug that doesn't have the purple wire connected to it)
Again a ralle value. I may be wrong but I dont think this particular type of presence control was around in 68.

Ralle's hook up:
I'm playing a plexi superlead from -67 or -68 ( I think it's a -68 ). The guitar is a home made strat with a heavyash body and a two peace maple neck. I'm using a Seymore Duncan JB J, and a Floyd Rose whammy. The set up is as follows:
The head ( set at 8 ohm ) into a dummyload.
Into a Powerbrake ( set at 8 ohm ).
Into a 8 ohm cab loaded with four 25 w celestion greeinies.
Now, the thing is that I have the dummyload in serie between the amp and Power brake, so I get a total load of 16 ohm, while the amp is set at 8 ohm.
I could just get a 16 ohm dummy and be done with that, but I need an attenuator to be able to play at home, and not scare away the people in the clubs. And the Power Brake has to be set at 8 ohm since my cab is at 8 ohm. If I were to set the PB at 16 ohm ( wich is possible ), I have to get a 16 ohm cab. So... to get this load of 16 ohm, and keep my PB in the chain, this is the only way to do it.

Does anyone know what these Ralle specs sound like WITHOUT the high output JB pickup since Eddie used a low output PAF? I know a jb drives those older amps more than a paf. I would love to hear a clip with Eddies style of pickup to see if it still has that same gain and tone.

cheers Dan, that's right I posted the Ralle spec - it's pretty similar to the EVH one. That mountain of NOS caps I told you about had 1 resistor in one of the bags, it turned out to be a NOS Carbon Comp one at 1k (measured closer to 1.1k), so I tried it in V2 instead of the 820ohm MO one and it really improved the sound like you said. It sounded more smoother and musical, and it was surprisingly noticeable for 1 resistor change. I want to put in a lot more CC's but I need to trade or sell some of the caps I bought first as I just can't afford to buy anything right now.

I remmeber seeing Cerrum post that on PP saying he used one of those cement resistors and it sounded smoother and creamier. I had 2 extra 1k5W xicons so I tried it. I think Id just prefer using CCs.

He mentioned using those 1k xicon 5W cement resistors for cathode resistors in place of the 820 ohms.

Oh ok, you tried it and you didn't see any real differences?

No I did think it sounded smoother actually. But just a touch. What I meant was CCs instead of cements.

I updated my Ralle Spec layout and it is complete now. Hope this helps.
It's an animation that you can watch in explorer or any browser.

or if you like a higher quaity (not as blurry) single images of the top and bottom, here's the single files used to make the above animation.
Turn 90 degree before printing, and they fit to a page.

Dan, you say the can on top for the EVH amp was 32uF - is that single or double 32uF?

Anyone know what Ralle has there?
