100uF Capacitor for 12000 Phase Inverter
Friedman says the 12301 phase inverter cap is an LCR 100uF. Aren't those obsolete? What are you VH addicts using and where are you getting them. I just looked at all of the major tube amp suppliers and nada.
I have a 32uF right now and it's 1" diameter. I'm hoping I can get something in the same size. Were the LCRs 500V?

Likely a dual 50uF. I have 4 or 5 of them. Not sure what they measure though. Probably close to an inch.

the LCR 50+50 500v caps are similar to the F&T except they are taller

Thanks James. Where did you buy them, or are these old/obsolete LCR 50/50's you're talking about?jnew wrote:Likely a dual 50uF. I have 4 or 5 of them. Not sure what they measure though. Probably close to an inch.

I agree, I think Dave was also probably talking about a LCR 50+50uF/500v cap. The LCR cap is 1-3/8 inches (35mm) in diameter and 2-15/16 inches (75mm) tall excuding the solder tabs.

I use an Erie 100f from Valvestorm here in the NOS section.

adding this to the PI made a huge difference in tightening things up.

Thanks for the replies everybody, I really appreciate it.Tazin wrote:I agree, I think Dave was also probably talking about a LCR 50+50uF/500v cap. The LCR cap is 1-3/8 inches (35mm) in diameter and 2-15/16 inches (75mm) tall excuding the solder tabs.
So which one is the best for me at 100uF?

Also, except for the last link, these are all 1 3/8" diameter. Will these work in my 12000 chassis if I use this?

If you want to use what Dave used, Neil is your man.neikeel wrote:I've got some 100uF LCRs NOS but they are pcb spike type tabs
Or scroll down to the ARS or Erie cans here:

You will need a bigger ring and will have to drill two new holes, no way around it.

Those are only rated for 350V IIRC...you may or may not run into problems in the PI where the voltage could easily exceed that. Depens on your PT, variac or not etc.rgorke wrote:I use an Erie 100f from Valvestorm here in the NOS section.

I do greatly prefer 100 uF over 32 uF in the PI myself on these amps.

Re: 100uF Capacitor for 12000 Phase Inverter
I'll end up with one of the caps from AES, as I'm buying the rest of the parts from there to bring my friend's metroamp kit up to DF VH spec. I'll drill/file if I have to, I already have an extra hole in the chassis for a different choke. It's a Metro kit so it's not like it's a collector piece, as much as I love it.shakti wrote:Those are only rated for 350V IIRC...you may or may not run into problems in the PI where the voltage could easily exceed that. Re: 100uF Capacitor for 12000 Phase Inverter
I gave Jeremy a dual 50uF for his PI position and I think he only needed to only drill 1 extra mounting hole for it to work. No big deal IMO.
I don't really recall where I got them but I think I got them on e-bay back in like 07 or 08 for a Small Box 100 watt project.

Re: 100uF Capacitor for 12000 Phase Inverter
I bought a couple of the LCR 50/50 500v caps from HiFi Collective last month for $25.00ea. They are formed and tested and worked out great in my 1986.

Re: 100uF Capacitor for 12000 Phase Inverter
so when you guys use 100uf in the PI, do you still drop down to 32uf in the pre and screens? and keep mains at 100?
