Is this off axis micing?

Is this what is considered off axis? does this give the best tone rather then straight on?

Pretty much. Once you aren't pointing directly at the cone (the mic doesn't have to be at an angle) it is considered off axis.

Not necessarily. It all depends on the tone you want. It's totally subjective. Personally I'd start of by pulling the mic a good bit away from the speaker. I don't particularly like the sound of extreme close mic'ing.
Since you have that box: try using a mic cable with an angled connector. It'll allow you to pull the mic further from the speaker.
Experiment with a couple of mic positions and take note of the differences in tone.
