Mercury Magnetics transformers!

Post by VelvetGeorge » Thu Oct 23, 2003 4:09 pm

I've been in contact with the folks at MM about a project I'm putting together (anouncement coming soon!!) and have decided to take them on as a dealer.

I'll only be able to stock the most common models at first, due to the overhead. But I can provide any model from the Axiom line.

Doesn't Blockhead amplification use those transformers? I've heard of the somewhere but i know they are pretty damn good sounding. I could be wrong about Blockhead but my ears aint wrong!

Not sure about Blockhead, but MM are reknowned for being very high quality. I'm building a project using one of their Marshall style chokes and it is definately well made.

There's a thread by Bluefuzzguitar detailing his experience with installing a MM OT in his reissue. The reults sound quite inspiring.
Read it here-

I've been hearing a lot about Obsolete Electronics JTM and Plexi replica transformers. Does anyone know how the compare to the MM's?

I haven't tried the OEI,but I have used MM(in several amps) Heyboer, Shinrock and Handwound in amps. Of these, the Heyboer and MM are the best. MM makes the heaviest, best looking part with teflon wiring and most solid hardware. They sound great, especially in a 50 watt plexi style amp but they also cost $$$. Heyboer makes a great part, and they sound wonderful.....these are the standard in the amps I am making. A really great part. Shinrock makes a good part, it sounds good, but the asthetics are just OK......plus he hasn't been making parts for several months now, so I am not sure he will be around long. And Handwounds is basically making Hammond transfomers......nicer bell ends and better looking than Hammond, but they are A$$holes to deal with and have TONS of customer complaints and issues. AVOID Handwound at ALL COSTS.
If I was building one amp for myself, I would use the MM's......you won't regret spending the extra $$.

HCS, thanks for the great info and sharing your experience.
I've been wanting to try some Heyboer trannies and have emailed them twice with no response. Is their service better via phone?

They are an older company, the internet and email isn't their thing. Give them a call, they are VERY helpful and friendly, and they ship quickly. They know their stuff and will wind whatever you want for the same price as a stocked unit....... Their prices are below MM's 5 piece discount price, I think a pair of 50watt plexi transformers and one choke run about $200.
The parts I have used are great, I use them as standard in all my amps.
Here is their number:

Shane,

You won't regret it! I'm glad I inspired you to take the plunge! Remember I have the SL (Self Lead) OT, which makes for more clean headroom. If you want a more compressed tone then go for their regular Axiom OT. Happy holidays and more plexi power to ya!

George also recommended i get the regular model also. After this final mod to my reissue (already have the p2p board from George), i'm sure i'll have the good original '69 plexi/Les Paul sound that won't be too harsh. I'll be sure to update on the sound difference when i get mine installed and crank the beast at I-Rock nightclub in Detroit! I'll consider it a christmas present to myself... a very good Christmas present :P

Happy Holiday's, and Merry__________ (insert your religeous holiday) ha ha. Politically correct America.[/img]
