What Amp Should I get!!!

Post by britishbluesfan » Mon Feb 08, 2010 7:52 pm

Hey guys I am a young blues guitarists who is looking into buying a new amp butt I Am unsure on what I should get. Iv'e Narrowed it down to either a 68 super lead or a Jtm 45 PA spec build. I am currently running an eric johnson strat, a 1960 les paul reissue modded by larry corsa :D , into a ts 808, fuzz face, and a b.k butler tube driver. I love the Udo pipper tone, but my main influences are Peter Green Fleetwood Mac, Eric Clapton ( blues breakers/cream era) and Jimmy Page. Im just looking for a versitile amp that can cover the british sound. I currently have a deluxe reverb but it sound fizzy and produces a very unmusical overdriven tone. Im going for the Peter Green and Joe Bonamassa tone.

Not that it will answer your question, but Joe is trying out a 45/100 soon. I suspect because of the connection with 45/100's and Eric Johnson.

For your needs a few things come to mind. How loud do you (can you) play? Do you prefer tube rectified amps over solid state? Will you be setting the amp fairly clean and using your pedals for overdrive?

The 12,000 Series head is a bit more versatile than the GPM 45. But isn't as accurate for early Marshall tones.

Thanks for the reply... I plan on setting the amp clean and using my pedals for a smooth overdrive. Im looking for tones similar to these clips.

And of course the solo tone to clapton's badge.
I also like to get the led out from time to time as well as the stones.
For the Jtm 45 I plan on running it through a 2x12 cab loaded with either celestion green back 20 watters,25s,or 30s. (what do you recommend.)
If I go for the jmp 100 Ill either run it through a 4x12 loaded with 25s or 30s!!!

Really? Or am I the only one that thinks this sucks a little?

If that's the case then you'll probably still want an attenuator. Even clean these amps can easily exceed 100watts. Personally I'd also be damn careful using a JTM45 with a 2X12 with same speakers.
So I like purple, okay!!!!!!

a 45/100 unless you want less volume and punch and more compression (then you need a jtm45)

In time, you will probably acquire one (or more) of each type. But since your main interest appears to leen toward early '60s British tones, I would suggest starting with a JTM45. If you want to plug that into a 2x12 unattenuated and will play at higher volume settings, check out the Celestion Golds.
