The MM does sound good. And it's a lot of fun to play on. It makes you want to rip.

Here's a clip of the first two riffs with the MM. This time with everything set to "5" again. You can hear more difference on these than the Mountain clips.

Interesting. The MM on the last clip was really clean sounding compared to the other two. Overall I would say I like the clone, then the MM and finally the Dagnall. What does the Heyboer sound like? Oh yeah my wife asked if you could record the whole All Right Now. she likes that song and started singing to it. Guess you have a fan lol.

Yeah, i definitely think the new Clone sounds the best.

I did have to lower the presence control a little with the MM clip to avoid occillation. Which is to be expected with the OT not mounted to the chassis and the leads running everywhere.

No doubt. If you can't get the job done with those OT's, you should just stay home.

I'm very pleased with the clone and can't wait to break it in. The MM is still a great OT too. Just not quite as accurate to the original.

MM is definitely the warmer of the group, which is good if you like that sort of thing... like me!

Now that my wife has gone to bed, I've had a chance to do some more careful listening ... and I think I like the Mercury best. It sounds a little sweeter. I'm guessing the Heyboer will get a little closer after breaking in some more?

Indeed, they all sound great. The MM O100JM is very good. You can't really go wrong with it.
Strand me on a desert island with it and I'll be rockin. In all fairness I should have done the test with the self lead version of that OT. Which sounds more open. But, I didn't have one in the shop.

The Dagnall clone was intended to be just that: a clone. I need an OT to be the 1.5" standard in my kits. And in the amps I build. So the idea was to replicate my '69 Dagnall, warts and all. I'd say mission accomplished.
These new OT's sound like what I imagine the originals sounded like 35 years ago.

Both of these transformers still follow conventional guitar amp OT guide lines. Which is great and familiar. Not to mention desireable. We all want them to sound like the amps we've been hearing our whloe lives, right?

For the next step, we have to wait for John's new OT's. It sounds like he's taking the glorious aspects of these old lumps of iron into the next century. Where I only try to emulate antiquated technology, he's trying to create something new. This will be interesting.

Or maybe I shouldn't have watched three episodes of Nova (a PBS science show) tonight.....????

i think i like the clone the best but would have to hear a mercury magnetics in person to judge!

I'm going to put this one through it's paces for a week or so. Then do some more critical listening with it broke in. Assuming I like what I hear I'll have a run of them made. Should be right after the first of the year.

On a less appealing note, the $135 price estimate I had isn't going to work. The self leads and other specs raise the price a bit. I hate to do it but I have to make the price $150. At least until I can order in quantities of 25 and up.
