Ceriatone transformers
i know they got their transformers from
http://www.promitheusaudio.com/transformers.html
but how do they compare with mercury magnectics and heybor transformers?
i was wondering if upgrading the transformers in my ceriatone 2203 will make a noticable improvement

Re: Ceriatone transformers
recap the entire thing with Sozo caps and use the C1998 Clone from George and you should see a tone improvement over the stock Mallorys and tranny.

Some don't like Sozo caps in a 2203 build. I plan on using IC caps that I got from Larry for my 2203 build.JamesHealey wrote:recap the entire thing with Sozo caps and use the C1998 Clone from George and you should see a tone improvement over the stock Mallorys and tranny.

Re: Ceriatone transformers
Subjective I suppose. I put a Sozo loaded board in a 1983 JCM 2204, and that was one of the best sounding amps I've had the pleasure to *mess* with. Installed a PPIV MV as well, and the sounds available were incredible.joshwilson3 wrote:Some don't like Sozo caps in a 2203 build. Standard Sozo's, and the amp absolutely killed! The guy who owns it now loves it.

Haven't heard of them. Maybe Larry has heard of them as it looks like the company is based over in Europe. If you can get them and have been recommended them, then it wouldn't hurt to try them. It is all a crapyshoot anyways.budubum wrote:thanks josh.

Re: Ceriatone transformers
I had a ceriatone super lead for a while, and I replaced the OT for a mercury. (just to see what it would sound like). it really didn't make too much of a difference, in my opinion. I was expecting it to sound fairly different, but the difference in tone was pretty minimal.Hydesg wrote:i know they got their transformers from

I actually kept the original transformer for a new build because of that.

Re: Ceriatone transformers
i'd say it was a little clearer, maybe less compression too.budubum wrote:how about the attack of the strings? were they tighter and clearer or was it thesame?jp0971 wrote:I had a ceriatone super lead for a while, and I replaced the OT for a mercury. Re: Ceriatone transformers
Interesting
it seems that filtering and caps affect the tone much more

I haven't heard many good things about Illinois Caps.
Some say worst of the worst.

they do hold up pretty well though. one of my bravosgot a freshly installed TAD filter caps and one of them got this brown/bronze powdery thing going on on one of its side.
my other bravo still got those 19 year old illionois cap and still holding strong. no buldge or anything whatsoever

That's said about the Illinois electrolytic caps, but I can't confirm it. The rumor is coming from Dave Funk.Structo wrote:I haven't heard many good things about Illinois Caps.

But the IC foil caps are beyond any doubt!

The fault almost always is sitting in front of the amp
