recap the entire thing with Sozo caps and use the C1998 Clone from George and you should see a tone improvement over the stock Mallorys and tranny.

Some don't like Sozo caps in a 2203 build. I plan on using IC caps that I got from Larry for my 2203 build.

Subjective I suppose. I put a Sozo loaded board in a 1983 JCM 2204, and that was one of the best sounding amps I've had the pleasure to *mess* with. Installed a PPIV MV as well, and the sounds available were incredible.
Standard Sozo's, and the amp absolutely killed! The guy who owns it now loves it.

Haven't heard of them. Maybe Larry has heard of them as it looks like the company is based over in Europe. If you can get them and have been recommended them, then it wouldn't hurt to try them. It is all a crapyshoot anyways.

I had a ceriatone super lead for a while, and I replaced the OT for a mercury. (just to see what it would sound like). it really didn't make too much of a difference, in my opinion. I was expecting it to sound fairly different, but the difference in tone was pretty minimal.

I actually kept the original transformer for a new build because of that.

i'd say it was a little clearer, maybe less compression too.

Interesting :D :D it seems that filtering and caps affect the tone much more

I haven't heard many good things about Illinois Caps.
Some say worst of the worst.

they do hold up pretty well though. one of my bravosgot a freshly installed TAD filter caps and one of them got this brown/bronze powdery thing going on on one of its side.

my other bravo still got those 19 year old illionois cap and still holding strong. no buldge or anything whatsoever

That's said about the Illinois electrolytic caps, but I can't confirm it. The rumor is coming from Dave Funk.

But the IC foil caps are beyond any doubt!

The fault almost always is sitting in front of the amp
