JCM800 choke vs. Marstran 3H C1999 audio clip test

I hope I didn't mess up the recording process because these two sound way more different then I was expecting. From what I read, both are 3H chokes, so they should perform VERY close... not to mention why would something as simple as a choke make this much difference?

First the lick and chords twice with one choke, then the same licks/chords twice with the second choke:

http://tylergrund.com/mp3/choketest.mp3" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I'll tell you guys which choke was which after a few listens. BTW, just for reference, the JCM800 choke came from http://www.tubesandmore.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and is the direct marshall JCM800 replacement choke. if that helps.

(now keep in mind the marstran is brand new and needs to break in a bit more for sure!)

For what it's worth...I felt the 2nd half of the clip had a more pronounced, snappier bottom end.

I just love snappy, bottom ends.... :mrgreen:

I have not yet heard the samples but I experienced that a choke can make a notable difference - on two of my amps it made a bigger difference than changing the output transformer.

I like the throatiness in the first 1/2, and I really like the clarity in the 2nd 1/2. Too bad we couldn't have both together!

So, which choke is which?

I liked the first one. The second sounded a little harsher to me.

First one seemed pretty tight, second rounder with a vintage chime.
Made me realize I could live with either one. So which is witch?

So sorry guys! I totally forgot I even posted this. Honestly, I'm having a tough time remembering, but I think the JCM800 was FIRST and the Marstran was SECOND.

The simple reason was that I remember my initial reaction when I made the switch. I lost some warmth with the Marstran, but gained clarity in the notes.

Again, sorry, totally forgot to post.

The first is not bad, but the second one sounded nicer to my ears for the type of playing and sound you had dialed in.
