1971 Marshall 100 Watt Super Tremolo Trans and Choke

Post by mdc1 » Wed Jul 29, 2020 3:00 pm

Looking to restore PT, OT, and Choke.

The markings on a few of these seem lacking to me.

What are the original replacements to use and where is the best shop the get them?

I believe they would be Drake transformers in that year. Are you looking for newer replacements or original iron? Original may be difficult unless you get lucky with Ebay. You could also have yours rewound if you are set on keeping the amp original. For newer replacements there are several companies such as Mercury, Marstran, Metroamp and Classictone that make great replacement transformers for these amps. May I ask why you want to replace all three? Are all three bad?

You may also want to ask over at the Marshall Forum. A bunch of the guys that frequented here are still active over there and you may get more responses.

I had some smoking and the amp cut out. Looking at all of them as part of the repari. They do not need to be original Drake or whatever. Want to order the right thing given this amp having more pre-amp tubes and stuff.

Classictone makes great iron at working man prices that many builders (including boutique companies) use in their builds. Scroll down the page to the 100 watt plexi style amps for the correct pieces. You would need the 40-18026 OT, 40-18046 PT (if yours is a lay down style and not upright) and the choke would be 40-18058. They do offer an upright PT with different voltage options and a larger upgraded OT should you choose.

You could also check out the Heyboer transformers that Metropoulos and Marstran offer. Both are very nice and may look more authentic. I have used them all and generally go with Classictone for power and choke. For the OT I will sometimes use Classictone or Heyboer depending on what's most available. Mercury also makes some nice products but they are out of my price range.

Should you decide on Classictone, be sure to order from Tubedepot. Triode Electronics also sells Classictone but there have been shipping delays and communication problems reported in the last couple of years.
