how does it sound? how does it play? cosmetics are never important if sounds and feels good to me.

Oh yes. Here is my baby! Should be getting this bad boy by the end of the month. Black. Not a super fan of olympic white or burst. The 68 RI only comes in the three colors. This first pic is BOG 1970 "who knows" Everybody raises such a stink over the white one, but I like the tone of blackie the best.

I tell ya, back when they were being shipped over here for sale, around 94-98, I think, I liked the playability of all of them. The 3 solid color models (black,white, sunburst) were made of Basswood, and there was a clear coated ash model. All versions had the maple round lam boards. I actually liked the tone of the Basswood models the best, as the ash ones were too bright and weak sounding. If those guitars had been made of alder, then I would have gotten one. The pick ups were fairly weak, just like they were supposed to be. '68 was a transitional year for strats. The first half of '68 still had the single 'FENDER' logo on the headstock, and put the label on after they had sprayed the neck with nitro. This is like the '68 reissue's. The later '68 strats, like Hendrix's first maple board guitars, had the 'Stratocater' part after the Fender part. These necks also were sprayed with polyuerathane, with the exception of the front of the headstock. Fender started putting the headstock decals on before spraying, and noticed the sticker 'reacted' with the poly, so they only used nitro for the front of the headstock. That is why on late 60's -70's maple neck strats, the headstock is always darker than the fretboard, cause nitro darkens more with age than poly. The Japanese '68 strats are paterned after the earlier '68 strats. The nitro finnish on those 'darken' through the years, which Fender Japan 'copied' using tinted poly. The tuning key's are also 'Klusion' style on the '68 reissue. This changed to the 'F' tuners later that year.
