Greco and Burny LP copies?

Post by Brevamusic » Tue Nov 27, 2007 10:19 pm

It seems you guys like the Tokai LP copies and have spoken very highly of them, but what about Grecos and Burnys? I've been watching them on eBay and was considering getting one. Any thoughts?

Chalk me up as a Greco lover.

I have two Greco Explorer types - a '79 Tobacco Burst Explorer and a '77 Destroyer. The Destroyer looks identical to the Ibanez Destroyer and was made in the same Fuji Gen Gakki plant. I'm not sure about the wood since the Greco Destroyer body is Sen and the Ibanez bodies folks say are Ash - similar toned woods, but different. The neck on both of them is 4-5 piece maple and the body is the same multi-piece construction.

Anyway, the Tobacco Burst is all mahogany body and neck and has a dark/rich tone - really sweet. The Destroyer is like a living organism - with a lively/sizzling tone. I dropped an RS Guitarworks Explorer kit in that and it sounds unbelievable.

In short, I've never played a Greco LP, SG, or other type but the two nearly 30 year old Grecos I have are very very nice instruments and more than worth the relatively low coin.

That's basically the story I'd heard back in the early '80s. I bought my first Greco on a trip to Japan in '82. I was told they couldn't sell under the name Ibanez in Japan for reason's I've since forgotten but the guitars were the same. I know my "Destroyer" type was built in the Fuji Gen Gakki factory which I believe is where many Ibanez were/are built. I have a '77-'78 Ibanez Custom Agent and the Grecos I have are far superior in tone and equal in build quality. I don't think the Custom Agent was a top of the line LP "clone", though it is unique. It was my main ride through my mid-late '70s gigging years.

These are good guitars that still fly a bit under the radar I think.

+1

Here's a link...

Also check his ebay inventory.

He used to sell dozens. People have been catching on so you have to give him a weekly visit.

Check out his Greco '59-style Les Paul Standard in Cherry Sunburst Flame.

I use his shots of the control knobs for my desktop at times. Usually the last pick.
