Strat wiring help needed....

Post by Scumback Speakers » Tue Jan 01, 2008 4:55 pm

So I'm rewiring my Strat and I've gone online and can't find a wiring diagram for what I'm after..

2 volume pots, 1 universal tone, all three single coil pickups (WCR SR set), 5 way switch, just the usual wiring that allows neck, neck & middle, middle, middle & bridge, bridge alone.

I'd like the neck and middle pickup to run off the first volume pot, the bridge off the second, and have the third as the universal tone control.

Anyone know where a schematic or layout for this might be found online? I haven't had any luck so far.

Thanks in advance!

These may help. Neither are exactly what you want but you can probably mix parts of each to get the volume/tone combo you described.

Your going to have a hard time with that. At least one position will always be 'compromised'. I tried a million different variations with the double pole 5 way switches in fenders but with hte notch positions you will always couple all the controls in at least one position. Thats why you never see 2 volumes and a master tone. You could use 1 volume but I tried to have 2 volumes for the same reason. I wanted separate volume for the neck.

With 3 a 3 way switch it would work

If you use the second diagram toner linked thats your best bet.

Its more or less the same as this (if you can follow my scribble)

Huh, checked out all those diagrams, and you guys are right, I compromise on the middle pickup use. No wonder I'm mostly a Les Paul/Gibson wiring guy...

Well, I guess I'll just have to consider the push/pull pot...although it's kinda unwieldy. Thanks for the help gents! 8)

How about a blender pot on the bridge or the neck pick-up?

I'm not smart enough to do the blender pot thing, I'm afraid. What I wanted to do was preset my neck/middle volume for cleaner chords and have the bridge volume louder and ready to go with just a flick of the switch (kinda like my Gibson setup). I also hoped that I would be able to blend bridge volume (say on 10) with the middle (on say 7) for other cool tones that weren't totally over the top gain and volume wise.

I've put that chromacaster rotary switch from the deaf eddie site on a couple of strat's. I know it's not what you're looking for, but you can get some pretty cool series out of phase Brian May tones happening with that mod. Phil

Yeah, it probably does provide some neat tones, but I'm just looking to make my Strat functional and usable for a LP/SG type guy. That means no thinking past what I've already learned in the last 36 years of guitar playing (which ain't much, by the way).

If I have to learn new controls, switches and all that, I'll fall from a Class D player to "Aspiring to Garage Band Player" status.

I just couldn't deal with that, I don't think. I can't believe no one has done this before, and posted a diagram. Why do I always think the obvious should be available? WTF?

Torres used to sell the blender pots. I'm sure someone out there has a wiring setup that is close to what you're looking for. Phil
