a guitar that doesn't sound good when new will never sound good unless you change something on it that makes it sound better !!

also, i'm not sure you can compare a deluxe strat to a vintage style strat , knowing the bridge tremolo differences, as well as the neck ( biflex trussrod vs vintage style truss rod) pu's and other litlle things.
i tried a strat with samarium cobalt pu's and it was sounding like anything but a vintage style strat !
in another hand, a modern style guitar can sound good , but different from a vintage style one most of the times, if not all.

as someone just wrote, it's impossible to know if a guitar will sound good before it's finished !

you can buy some 4000 $ CS guitar that sound like shit and buy a 1500 $ vintage reissue that sounds great ; it's russian roulette if you don't try it before !

that said, i've been very lucky buying on the net and nearly all the guitars i bought through the web are sounding great (but i suppose it's not always like that for everyone ! ) .
in another hand, some of the guitars i had bought in some shops in france ,when i knew nothing about guitars, were not sounding that great (but some were beautiful ! LOL ) !
