Concerned with guitar

Post by kpinks » Tue Sep 09, 2008 9:33 pm

I noticed on my guitar, when I play a perfect 4th or 5th on the high E and B strings above the 15th fret, they sound slightly dissonant. I restrung with new strings, checked intonation and everything seems fine, until I play these 4th's and 5th's on the high frets? They are in tune on the lower fret register. What does this mean and how do I fix it? Is it possible I have an uneven fret or something?
Thx
Kev

Regardless of the type of guitar you've got, Im assuming that you know the intonation to be right on??
You didnt mention what kind of guitar you're talking about, but if its a Strat, thats a common problem, usually caused by the magnetic pull of the middle pickup, predominently. If it IS a Strat, try lowering the middle pickup until its only about 1/8" above the top of the pickguard. Be really careful not to lower it too much, or it'll fall off the screws, and you'll be yanking the pickguard off to catch those threads again.
If its not a Strat, try the same thing with the neck pickup of whatever guitar it is.
Generally speaking, assuming the guitar is correctly intonated, that problem is from magnetic pull.

Hey thanks for the reply. The guitar is actually a Wolfgang. I never had this problem before. I did have a new pup installed in the neck position, but due to the fact that the pups mount directly to the guitar, no springs etc... the pup height cannot be changed.
