Need some senash for my Destroyer Build

Post by StuntDouble » Sun Aug 24, 2008 1:29 pm

Does anyone know where to find this wood. I know it's a type of Ivy native to Japan, and I've searched the net and called a bunch of different timber suppliers, and I still can't find anyone who imports it to the states. I found a local builder who builds some really bitchin stuff, and I'd like to build an Ibanez Destroyer clone.

Can't help w/ sen, but I've played one and it's true that it sounds really similar to ash -- so much so you couldn't tell if you hadn't heard of sen. Multi-piece body. Also, the rosewood board is really dense, almost ebony-like, which adds to the sparkle.

cool, I was thinking about just going with ash or swampash, since I can't seem to find any Senash; which do you think Senash would sound closer to?

Dude, you live in the same town as WARMOTH, go by there and see if they have some? I bet they do have it somewhere in that facility! Or at least know where you can get it.

Yeah, I live a few miles from them, but I didn't see it listed in the woods they use; couldn't hurt to ask though. I also live a few blocks from Jack Pemintel...he's the guy that actually makes Mike's guitars; I didn't realize that until Mike Lull told me. I'm gonna give him a call on Monday, and see if he knows where to get any. 8)

Stunt -- At least asking Warmoth which wood mimics sen the best or sounds most like the early Destroyers might be worthwhile. I have to believe they've had that request before.

Re: my opinion on which it sounds more like, that's a tough one -- because in my experience ash can sound very different. The Destroyer I played sounds much like the older Ernie Ball/Music Man Axis Sport (EVH body shape) I own. I surfed and can't tell if that (EBMM) guitar is northern/hard or souther/soft ash. Hate to turn this into more of an easter egg hunt for you, but might be worth it to call EBMM to find out.

I'll play both again and see if I have any more insights.

Woohoo, no need. Just picked up a 75 Destroyer! Needs a new nut, a re-fret and a setup, but she sounds bitchin. :D Pickups squeal like a beeotch though; I wonder if there would be any harm in potting pups that old?

Wow, congratulations, but when you say "75 Destroyer" you mean it's a pre-serial right? -never seen a Destroyer with a 1975 date actually stamped on the headstock. Are the pickups Super 70? Do they have the pickup covers still on(if not, put some back on with a little foam for potting)? Where did you pick that baby up? I have four mid 70's Destroyers and they all are different, ranging in weight from 7lbs to 11lbs. The 11lbs Destroyer sounds the best and seems to resemble burl hard ash to me. Yep, there is no need to try and replicate the real deal, when you can still pick up a authentic mid 70's Destroyer for a song! The frets on my 1976 11lbs. Destroyer are totally flat, but I don't dare have this beautiful guitar touched by a luthier, NO F'N WAY!!!

Where the heck are you finding these guitars, guys? I check eBay from time to time and find either none or ones that are nutty priced (like 3K), and an exhaustive web search got me zip. Pls PM me if you have any ideas.

I just lucked out. I went to a little guitar shop in Sumner, WA, while my girlfriend was sniffing candles and potpourri at some shop down the street. The owner told me he had an old Ibanez flying V copy, and I asked him if he'd seen any Destroyers around. He told me there was one up at a shop in downtown Tacoma, so I popped smoke and went up there and snatched it up...$1300.00, not too bad :D

Strat78,

The guy at the shop told me that it was a pre-serial #, which made it a 75; I'm not really sure about that though. I haven't weighed the guitar, but it's damn near as heavy as my LP Custom. The frets were worn to nubs and the nut slots were pretty worn, so I had it re-fretted with Dunlop 6100s and had a new nut installed. The pups squeal, and the tuners suck, but; Dude, I love this guitar. :D

Awesome story! Are the tunes "star tuner" (pictured) because they should not suck. I adore my Destroyers, they simply scream 70's mojo!!! Here is a mid 70's Journey cover I did with my 76 Destroyer:

Sweet clip; nice tone and playing as always.! :D

I'm not sure if my tuners are original, although the rest of the hardware seems to be and the pups are. The tuners are standard Schallers w/ the screw attatchment at a90 deg angle...no stars; they're just really worn out feeling and inconsistent. I'm thinking about replacing them with some locking schallers and potting the pups when I get back from my deployment. It sucked having to leave it behind after only a few days with it. I may ask Jack Pimentell to refinish the body too; the upper rear horn has some dents and dings all the way to the wood.:( It looks like the previous owner(s) kept backing into things or used it to pummel a drummer; the rest of the neck and body looks good though.
