As much as I HATE THIEVES, EXPECIALLY GUITAR THEIVES, take the insurance payment and move on. I am a lawyer, and bad things and horror stories start out just like this thread. It isn't worth it...If he has the balls to walk out of your store with a guitar, who knows what he's capable of. Just my two thoughts. BTW, 80% of all homicides the victims knew the perp...

Good News Guys...
Some kid tried to have the stolen guitar appraised at a local music shop (to sell on ebay). The clerk, having seen the flyer that my buddy spread around town, instantly called my friend while the kid was there.
So my friend shows up with the police and the kid proceeds to tell the cops that his uncle gave it to him (or something like that). Turns out, his uncle was one of the two guys who were in the shop the day the guitar was stolen.
So the unlce gets arrested and my buddy gets his guitar back. Not a scratch on it. Don't know if the guy ever fessed up to stealing it or not. Doesn't matter anyway. Possesion is 9/10 the law.
The police are the ones pressing charges because it's a felony, I guess.

Violence is never the answer. Glad it worked out!
I had a guy trying to extort money from me that he said I owed him. He resorted to threatening phone calls. Of course I wanted to tell him "you start the shit, I'll finish it!!"
I kept my cool, however, and filed a police report every time he called. After the cops finally visited him, I followed with an official letter from my lawyer (in the Commonwealth of VA, you only get a restraining order in domestic cases) barring him from my property and that was that.
Though it was hard to keep my cool (I laughed at the guy every time he called), in the end I was much more satisfied that he had been dealt with and I never had to lower myself. If you use your brain, you are much more dangerous to any would-be criminals/grifters etc, than they could possibly imagine.
Course, had he ever shown up I would have shot the som'bitch.
