Noisy Vintage Fender Trem Springs Again (YJM Content)

Post by yngwie308 » Sun Dec 14, 2008 11:22 pm

I believe Iposted about this awhile back. It seems that the trem springs are too close to the sides of the trem cavity and that the springs themselves may interfere with the body at some points causing the dreaded spring clanging, heard on many a great Hendrix record though like, "I Don't Live Today, Third Stone From The Sun! Here are some snippets about the Duck replica and how it compares, ect. and the black spring issue!
Looking at the Duck replica's trem cavity and the spring arrangement, I saw that the Duck (Sorry I can't refer to it as the Play Loud anymore!!) has foam under the springs and the tremolo springs are triangulated as opposed to straight. I have noticed with my 2004 YJM that at loud volumes the trem springs creak noticeably...What do you guys think, how are your springs arranged, am I barking up the wrong tree??
Here is my stock YJM:

Here is the mega-buck Duck:

Thoughts, ideas??Also my springs kind of interfere with the body, ect.
These black springs I've heard about them, are they Fender issue? Also the triangulated spring mounting method I have on all my OFR equiped guitars. Do any of you other guys have your YJM springs this way. If you look closely the springs on my guitar actually are interfering with the trem cavity.
I think I will fool around with the mounting and experiment. Thanks for your reply John, where does one get these black strings? I do plan on an HS-3 for my neck position on this guitar and a Callaham plate and block for the tremelo. Also do the Duck springs appear to be thicker than the 2004 YJM springs?
Thanks for the videos guys, but I know that a lot of the Strat's tone comes from the resonance of the springs and the vibration transmitted from the block.
I will continue the research!!
These pics of Yngwie's guitars have the springs straight, so is the way he keeps them and the Duck is the only one so positioned??
Image
Also does anybody have a better scan of the above picture showing the back of the Duck, tucked into the fold of the magazine?
These are Wilkinson springs from the Stew-Mac catalog:

According to the book How To Make Your Electric Guitar Play Great by Dan Erlewine, he states, "The American Standard springs have a different tension than the vintage ones and Fender recommends three black springs for both .009 through .010 string sets."
I don't find any black Wilkinson springs, Malm.
I did find some black Fender springs on EvilBay:
Image
Are these the ones??
I did find these Fender ones for American Series Strats on Ebay, for $4.99 are these the ones?
Image
These later springs are they similar to the tension Yngwie would be using? And finally everyone recommends keeping the three springs mounted straight?

Here are shots of Yngwie's guitars with black springs, thanks to our buddy zhangbowst of China for these:

Would I need to raise the angle of the spring claw sightly to have the springs clear the body???
WOT,Billy..what do you say??

i never had that problem but i used mostly american standard strat untill about 3 years ago .
Hendrix had his tremolo blocked again the top of his strat, thus only moving the tremolo arm towards the strings.
since i have my vintage style mark knopfler strat , i did the same, put 5 springs and it's alright like that (and i'm also tuned 1/2 step down with 10/46 )

Thanks for the replies, I usually don't worry about this kind of stuff, have enough to concern me on a daily basis, just had heard about the black springs and thought a special mojo existed there. Also on aboth my other trem guitars, OFR's, the springs are three arranged in the triangulated pattern

yeah, can't you just pull them into the "triangular" pattern like the others? i always use that myself. i also put a little cotton under mine, i don't care for the infamous strat reverb at all for what i do.

You're a deep dude, Dave!

I have certainly found that different springs have significantly different tensions. I have had both the black springs, regular springs (some shorter than others) and goldish ones. (The goldish ones were definitely stronger than the regular ones.) I have also had springs that I've chucked because they just clanged way more than others even with cotton underneath them.

I noticed Charvel/Jackson started beveling the trem cavity toward the top of the body in order to prevent spring drag (not to be confused with some festivals).

I don't float my 6-point trems anymore. I've gotten into the habit of using 4 springs. Essentially I'm trying to even out the string tension. When I did float them, I was not without a Hipshot Tremsetter; seemed to add sustain as well.

I fixed that by puting some insulation in the cavity and stop the creaking noise coming through the amp

your springs are hitting the bottom of the cavity? I never encountered that. the claw angle might be off.

If they hit the sides of the cavity, set the strings in a triangle, although I never do this. I like them parallel. Stick some foam where it hits.
As far as black or chrome spring, i could care less. I set the bridge float where i want it, regardless of spring color.

I fixed mine by buying some 3/16" clear tubing and putting them inside the springs. No noise at all
