What's wrong with the standard NUT.

So actually, the Earvana and similar devices are a compromise since ideally each guitar should be compensated individually, as required. Nobody really wants to do that though, so these devices and methods (tuning offsets, etc.) can help a lot if the tuning inaccuracies get to you. Here again, it drives some folks nuts and doesn't bother others in the least. Some folks have tin ears, and some folks are hypersensitive to tuning inaccuracies. YMMV.

Tin ears
That'll usually start something, whether it's tin ears or whatever, I am amazed at how many folks don't notice the horendous inconsistancies in the first position, which for me is my only real gripe, I can cope with the more subtle areas. " My guitar doesn't need it " is a common statement. Then again, all the good players out there seem be be able to play in such a way as to appear in tune, muting and staying away from certain chords and the like, although if you listen to some country strummers it makes me cringe when some of them are so out of tune it's embassasing, I think country is embarrasing at the best of times anyway

To be fair, if it wasn't for the way I tuned, my guitars probably would need it.
But they don't. Only ever use a tuner to get my A string, then tune all four outer strings to that (using harmonics)
12 fret harmonic on the G gets tuned to the top E fretted at the third, and the D to the G using harmonics on the 5th and 7th.
Using ears to tune instead of poxy tuners (no amount of accuracy will help here, tuning each individual string to the correct pitch only makes things much worse) should yield superb results near the nut. With no noticeable problems going further up the neck (provided your bridge is adequately compensated after tuning to this method)

I don't have any problems at all, either on strats, les pauls, or even my POS Steinberger with it's zero fret.
So I like purple, okay!!!!!!

83.7% of all statistics are made up on the spot!
