Billy I totally agree about John being a hybrid player, I almost said the same thing myself, he has the note feel and vibrato of Gary Moore, yet can get shreddy when he wants to and I prefer him to Aldrich, and later years Sykes (please no flame wars!) Interestingly he loves the SDD-3000 delay and I have the triple delay SDD-3300, he is right about the great tone of these units, also using KT 88's in the 50 watt heads adds another dimension, plus he isn't afraid to use EMG'sTone Slinger wrote:John Norum is one of my favorite lead guitarist. He blends all of my favorite elements togather. He has great influences of Blackmore, Schenker, Roth and Moore, along with a singular melodic sense.
I remember reading an old Guitar For The Practicing Musician article where Kee Marcello, Johns replacement in Europe back in '87, was sorta slagging him (John). Kee said that John tried to play TOO fast and that his picking was off. I thought this smacked of jealousy. John played more great solo's on "The Final Countdown" alone, than Kee Marcello ever has in his whole career.
Those Marshall JCM 800 2205 models vary a bit in thier sound/circuit. The one's from sometime in late '87 to early '88 on (till the last of them were sold by '90), were very similar to the jubilee, except they (2205) had a hair more gain and clarity as compared to the Jubilee.
Schenker has gotten some pretty good tones from the 2205 model as well. I think those guy's (Schenker and Norum) have alway's used Marshall's and that the 2205 was,to them, the perfect balance of the "Old and New".
I think they compress a little open headroom out of the sound a bit too much, especially on distorted rhythms. Still, a great upper mid voiced amp for sure.
