Help with Charvel Specs circa 1990

Post by mkramer5150 » Mon Feb 04, 2013 6:26 pm

Hi Everyone,

I'm going to have a guitar made for me in the next few months and am in the process of finalizing what specs I want for the neck.

Back when I was in high school, a neighbor buddy of mine bought a cheap Charvel guitar off of the old Musician's Friend catalogue that they used to mail.

We traded guitars for one weekend and I absolutely fell in love with the neck on that Charvel -- it fit my hand like a glove. It felt like I could play whatever I wanted and did not have to fight the damn guitar neck to place my fingers where I wanted them to go.

Anyhow, I've been chasing that neck feel for the past twenty-five years and have yet to find a neck that even comes close.

Does anyone out there know what specs Charvel used back in the day? The guitar, as best as I remember, was as follows:

1989--1991 manufacture date (I think he bought it in early '91)
Black body, maple neck
Floyd Rose double locking trem
Had the bubblegum White Charvel logo on the headstock
Was probably made in Japan (though I really have no idea)

I'm guessing the nut was 1 11/16 with an R4 wide string spacing clamp

I'm at a loss as to the neck radius and the back contour.

Any help is much appreciated,

Thanks!

Mike

That definitely is a step in the right direction. The whole secret of Charvel's especially in the Pre-Pro and San Dimas eras is the neck carve and the hand sanding shaping, they are the best necks ever.
