For my next future Strat, I will use the reverse stagger Fralin Woodstocks, I prefer those to Fender's CS'69's.
I was doing that back in the mid-80s. Not with a Strat but with a different guitar. I loved Jimi Hendrix so I routed pickup cavities opposite of the standard Strat so that the P/Us would be upside down. I wanted to have more of a "Jimi" tone . . . Pretty interesting thinking for a 17-year-old kid.

Then I heard Alcatrazz Live Sentence and put my guitar down for a month . . .

  WOT, exactly that's how I felt the more I listened to Yngwie, especially the classic years, it's like why even bother picking up the guitar!!
Yes when I was 17, I was aping Jimi Hendrix pretty hardcore myself, with the full Super lead stack, DA Fuzz Face and Italian Cry baby pedal, even coil cords..
Sure miss my transition logo 1965 Strat though, my first guitar and it was incredible, it was the last rosewood board Strat I ever had, I would have to pay a lot of money to return to what I had in 1968, now!! I was 11 years old in 1966 when I went to London, so I was 13 when I was doing all this early tone chasing.
It sure stays dyed in the wool, still Strat's have always been my ultimate guitar.
I never heard back from you about your opinion on the Fender maple cap boards, how do you feel about them, tone-wise? I love the maple cap on my NOS Washburn SS80, but that has a maple quilt top on a polar body, SD JB's and a Gotoh Floyd, so slightly removed from a '68 Strat..my original question was about how Jimi loved his two maple cap necked '68's and if he had these necks added or they came from the factory that way.
This was the thread..

As far as the maple-capped boards . . . I've played them before and honestly couldn't tell a difference between the cap and the solid. Of course, a good comparison would be to take five or six similar, completely stock, same condition guitars from the same year and play them back-to-back. Of course that's not really feasible in this day and age for something vintage. Aging, wood selection etc. is going to factor in to tone 40+ years out.

I'm looking at possibly picking up a '72 Blackie Monday . . maybe. I already have a black '74 maple board . . . but this black '72 has a rosewood board . . . I'm sick I know! I did pass on a pretty sweet '71 sunburst 4-bolt a couple of months ago. Needed refret to really PLAY it and hear how it was going to sound. The price was definitely right, it was a one-owner axe, but the guitar just wasn't talking to me.

I also had a '65 Strat Fiesta Red refin years ago. Dame fine guitar it was. Bandmates really liked it. I sold it because I had just gotten married and had incurred a lot of debt LOL. Selling that got me right again. I don't really miss it, but I sure enjoyed playing it.

P.S. I still have my coily cords from the 70s HA HA HA

I just saw this thread now. As Dave says, I did experiment with the tone controls in my YJM Strat. I do like to have tone controls just in case I want to roll back some overly raspy high end. I did first use a RS Guitarworks .047 paper/oil cap, but it seemed to give an odd taper to the tone pots. Put it in a Telecaster, which seems to like it better.

I then tried Hovland .022s, wired with separate caps for the neck tone control and middle/bridge tone control as per the original wiring. Works A-OK for me, although I can't say that the price of these caps is merited. They do fine, but it's not like they're the be-all and end-all.

FWIW, I used a PVC6147 .047 Mallory cap in my Blackmore Strat. They look just like Sprague Orange Drops. Works just fine.

Man, I've been listening to alot of the 80's era Malmsteen lately. His lead tone (particuarly the neck position) just amazes me. I have all of the early mags that Yngwie appeared in. The Gutar World from '84 has photo's showing the flat pole pieces of the HS-3's.

Yngwie TOTALLY relied on the DOD 250 to get his tone. I think his rhythm missed the mark (a little flubby /whoofy) but it was a sacrifice to get at what he was mainly about....... LEADS !!! He got amazing leads.

Been really rediscovering 'Odyssey' lately. Man Turner could sing ! Bringing back old memories.

Yngwie TOTALLY rips on acoustic as well as super, fat, pregnant with TONE solo tones on 'DREAMING'.

I love his playing, and consider him one of the most influential of all time.

That DOD-250 must add a lot of high-end, or perhaps Yngwie's amps are really bright, which in either case would require some taming of the high-end. I just never could get enough high-end out of them when I had mine.

I'd say that without the DOD-250, the HS-3 has quite a lackluster tone...

Not thick enough and juicy for my tastes. I am very interested in their hot stack single coils or maybe even stick a little 59 in the neck. The only thing i wonder is the point of it all... why go to duncan and come out with the same old pickup? Any changes to these i wonder?

Yes you were correct..
I finally got around to getting that DP-217 it took 2 months to get lol and 2 minutes before i yanked it. Horrible absolute zero output, nice clean tone to her but zero on the umph or output. I can't seem to allow myself to rely on pedals, I figure if I cant build my amp to get the needed gain I need to rebuild lol
I was surprised how well the stock pup sounded tho lol compared to the DP-217 Question those Malmsteen Axes 1700.00 or whatever they come with these shit ass pickups??Sorry to sound rude however, I was truly let down, or do they really sound that great with a dod 250??? lol I cant do it tho.
I liked the over all tonality of the pickup only if she had more output.

Yeah, I just don't see the point of using a pickup with such low output that you need a preamp pedal to boost the signal. My philosophy is to just use a hotter pickup (with the frequency response you like) and eliminate the need for a preamp pedal altogether...
