Well, thats almost unfair... Ill bet a piece of sheetrock with Jay Turser humbuckers glued to it would sound awesome thru a '70 Super Lead!!!yladrd61 wrote:I have a Gibson '57 Classic in the neck and a '57 Classic Plus bridge on my LP Studio and they sound awesome through my '70 Super Lead

(But I get your point, though. Almost ANY of the reproduction PAF type pickups sound good. Some are better than others... its all in the ear.)

Yea, I'm digging High Order pickups. I'll get those when I have the chance. Any PAF replica is going to be what I want, more so then the 490R and 490T.

The '57 pickups are lower output and you have to run them closer to the strings they get rid of a lot of the harshness. I like them a lot more more the 490 and 496 I had in mine.Ydna wrote:Yea, I'm digging High Order pickups. I'll get those when I have the chance. Re: Best PAF style pickup?
I've been using various Highorder humbuckers for years, let alone the tone & response, the workmanship and care that go into Jeffs pickups is a thing of beauty.
Its a mix of engineering experience and a love of great guitar tone and great ears, plus its still a one man operation so Jeff has complete control over every aspect.
I dont intend to highjack this thread but i see all of these other PU winder getting lots of mention all over the internet (and deservedly so),,,,Jeff can wind a PAF type up there with the best imo.
Dont forget there also excellent examples of pat no. Gibson (early to mid 60s Gibsons) that sound superb,,,,,Eric Claptons 64 ES 335 and Eric Johnsons 64 SG Standard (which i witnessed live,,,unbelievable tone) that are absolutely benchmarks of tone as well as PAF humbuckers.
I think the fact that Jeff recognized a lot of great tone was created by T Tops and Pat no humbuckers as well as real PAF speaks volumes.

Jeff at Highorder has wound some of my favorite PAF type pickups too. He's a hell of a great guy to work with, he really took care of me. I have his pickups in three of my guitars. Phil

Well alright, see, there you go. The SD '59 always works. Definitely a bump over those ceramics. 50's wiring dude, don't forget!Ydna wrote:Just got the Seymour Duncan Vintage Blues set (59's). I'll be installing them tomorrow hopefully. Can't wait.

Re: Best PAF style pickup?
Just to add my .02 cents. If your guitar isn't cleaning up until your pot is turned down to 3, I would imagine, as with most newer production Gibsons, it has a 300K linear volume pot in the gutiar. Might I suggest a 500K audio taper pot. Your guitar will clean up a lot sooner and it will brighten/clear things up a bit.

Yea, they sound great. Now ofcourse, they'd sound better through a metro, but I have no idea when I'll be able to get that.

I would check out Motor City Pickups "Blackbelts". I put them in my PRS and they simply sound alive. I know met a guy with a real 59 burst and he turned me on to these. Simply fantastic pickups.

Re: Best PAF style pickup?
yes they are amazing but cost much more than a 59. I think of the less expensive P.A.F copies seymour is the best. He has a great ear and a incredible history behind his work.LP's Rock wrote:I would check out Motor City Pickups "Blackbelts". I put them in my PRS and they simply sound alive. Re: Best PAF style pickup?
I am really happy with my Suhr SSV, DSV, and DSV+. They get those PAF type tones in spades and are very reasonably priced. Another inexpensive option that sounds great IMO is the old standby DiMarzio PAF. I put one in my son's guitar and it totally surprised me...
