Help help quick please!!! 60s strat expert needed. Pic look

Post by Bluesgeetar » Mon Sep 10, 2007 11:38 am

Someone offered this pickup to me for a $100. He says it is a 67 Fender single coil for strat. Any strat expert got an idea if it really is a 67 pickup?

Man, thats a tough one, from that pic, BG. It LOOKS real enough, but there are an awful lot of guys that are really good at relic work these days. There should be either a date actually written by hand on the bottom of the pup, or an ink stamp, the last two digits indicating the year of mfg. (an ink stamp of 18 52 72 would have been made in 1972), but that could be bogus too. Tread carefully, bud. :? BTW, Mac, if you look carefully at that photo, those polepieces look like they MIGHT be staggered. Hard to tell, though.

67 strat pickup?????

Post by Smit » Mon Sep 10, 2007 5:25 pm

Without close-up photos of the bottom, side, and top it is impossible to assess what that pickup is or how old it is. Or if it has been rewound or it even works? Has he metered it?
I saw it posted for sale and the guy doesn't even know if it's from a tele(?) or strat, so how does he know it's a 67 unless the base has a date? Just need better photos.

Well, I am supposed to meet the guy in the morning to check it out. He is bringing a small Gorilla amp to show me that it works. Is there anything else I need to look for? I can take a meter with me to measure the ohms. So what am i looking for and all? Like Fillmore NYC said, any one could write a date on the bottom. ANy other things to look for in the morning. I am guessing the Ohms should be around 5.6K-5.9K right for a 67. Grey bobbin? Top one looks black and bottom grey from the pics. He isn't really axious to produce more pics cause he said his mailbox is full of folks wanting it. So it's now or never. I guess I was the first one to email him. :D

I have been looking for any photos I may have of 60's Fender pickups to post, but no luck. It' true that anyone can write a date on the bottom, but if you have seen one before the real ones are easier to pick out. Good luck.

Well I went ahead and bought the thing. Haven't installed it on a guitar yet. But there is a weird thing with it. I can't get any measurement on the ohms meter. The pickup makes sound though. He showed me in the parking lot. He had these little leads attached to the input of a tiny 7"X9" Marshall portable amp he then attached the leads to the leads on the pickup. He then tapped on the magnets of the pickup. They were hot. They made plenty of sound when tapped on. Strange. Maybe got a crappy pickup or a crappy meter? The date code on it says 3 - 16 -67 - SC

As far as the stagger goes? If it is staggered it sure is the lightest stagger I have seen. I think I got dupped.

Your right. The two end mags are the lowest of all six.
