Pickup Advice

Ok now that I think I have sorted out my JMP 50 problem . . I am thinking I need to find another pickup for my Les Paul that has more gain.

Right now I have a Burst Bucker 2, I like the overall sound (dig the feedback due to the lack of potting) but can tell I need more ummphhh.

When I play the guitar back to back with my San Dimas Charvel that has a vintage Batrolini I can tell it is just not hot enough.

Can I get some recommendations ??

Want to keep the LP sound, and want the pick up to have that old school feed back ability ( ahhhhhh nnnnngggggggggggg) you know like Spinal Tap . . .

But it needs to be aggressive.

Thanks

I'd reccomend 'High Order' , I think they are called. Seems that most pick-ups go from 8k for slightly hotter paf tone, and then they start up again at around 12 to 14k, with no middle ground between 8k to 12k. I hear that High order will wind a pick up to your output/gain specs, as well as letting you choose wire width and magnets (2,3 or 5 alnico). I would reccomend a alnico 5 magnet wound at around 9 k output. If there is a stock ready to order pu like that, maybe Fralin, then I'd reccomend that.

Hi Order, WCR, Bare Knuckles, SD Custom Custom or EVH, Fralins...

....all good!

Jeff at High Order can recommend something you WILL like. Same with Jim at WCR.

I think I read somewhere that Steve said that it was almost identical to a S.D 'JB', so that would make it around 14K I think.

I have and love a couple of sets of High Orders ,but Smits pickups are just as good and can be wound however you like as well.

I have a Smits 10K with an AlNiCo 2 magnet that is freakin' killer, hotter output but a totally vintage vibe to its wail. Killer Gary Moore tones.

I think from memory the Rebel Yells use a thinner gauge of wire though than your average PAF, so turn for turn they'll have a higher DCR. Tim will be able to confirm for you though, or he'll recommend you something from the range if you tell him what you're trying to achieve. Great pickups - I just need to find a spare guitar to try them in!

The Steve Stevens Rebel Yells were designed to be used with Les Pauls (modern ones) and work well with multi- effects units as well, as Steve is wont to use. They are excellent pickups and many people use them, they have a great chrunch and cut through the mix well.
