best 60's sratocaster pu clones ?

Post by electricskychurch » Sat Feb 09, 2008 5:32 pm

what are the best stratocaster 60's clone pickups ?

i have a mark knopfler strat (62' strat ri with slightly thinner neck ) and tried several pu's inside but didn't find the ones for me yet :
i removed the stock texas specials that were not vintage type of tone, then tried some 50's custom shop from my 50th anniversary std strat but didn't like them much inside.
i replaced them with some 57/62 that were sounding better but a bit harsh as it's a bright guitar.
so i put some 69' custom shop pu's that are not bad but still not exactly what i look for although these and the 7/62 are already nice vintage type of tone pu's.

i heard about several ones, fralin, van zandt.. but don't really knwo which are really the best clones of 60's strat pu's !

I own a set of Fralin's Vintage Hots and enjoy them. Everyone always tells me that its the "strattiest" strat they've ever heard. Its a very clear sounding guitar.

It is a brighter guitar, but not harsh. The pickups are underwound, and I use pure nickel strings. I don't mean so much trebly as I mean that there is lots of separation between notes, definition you could say.

The guitar is as follows:
2 piece alder body
1/4 sawn maple neck with brazilian rosewood board and CBS Headstock
Underwound Fralin Pickups, and I believe that the tonecap is a .047.

Here is a clip...mine is the guit that sounds really good (I'm the fat guy with the white one) lol I'm running a JTM 45 volume at about 8 on the amp. Speakers are 2 12h30's from weber.

I sing this song live now, and it has improved from a visual standpoint (we move now  )

Whatever PUs are in my Custom Shop '60 Relic Strat - those sound pretty darn good.

They are the stock ones that came in the guitar. Guitar is an '06.

yes, it seems to sound good, although the recording might have been better to really compare with the best hendrix ones.
despite the quality of the recording, the guitar seems to sound good.

underwound with 0,047 uf and it's not bright with a jtm45 clone /ri !!! ??

is it a metroamp jtm45 ?

what OT ?

or is it a stock reissue ?

what strat is it ?

a 66' CS or 69' CS ?

what mic/preamp did you use to record and how was positioned the mic ?

my mark knopfler strat (sort of 62' ri with slightly different neck) is a nice guitar but it's already bright with a 0,1 uf cap with 69' cs pu's and jtm45 with marstran 103 OT / original g12h30 / 102 003 cones , so i imagine how it would be with 0,047 !.
it's less bright with my original 66' park45 (jtm45).

i might buy another strat, a custom shop 60' , 65, 66 or 69' , got to find the good one and maybe change the pu's but i would like to find the good pu's for this one i have already as it seems to be a good guitar with a good tone when not plugged (and plugged as well but it can be bright, especialy the bridge pu), that is not so bright, so i suppose i should be able to make it sound good with better pu's (or some that are more adapted to the guitar )

is it an original pre 65' jtm45 you have ?

or a metroamp with MM RS Deluxe OT clone ?

or a clone jtm45 with original RS Deluxe OT ?

The JTM is a clone built by Bluze81, a member here, he would know the exact specs. It is the RS OT available through Metroamps, run at a mismatch (8 ohm cab, 16 0hm tap). Mustards and Allen Bradley's inside, with Valvearts KT 66's and original Mullard Ecc83's.

The guitar is a custom one that I built using Warmoth parts. I love it, and I have every intention of building another strat soon.

The mic'ing was just a shitty camcorder in the back of the the venue, it sounds amazing onstage. Especially since I swapped v2 for an Amperex Bugle Boy, its so woody and at the same time toothy.

Give me a list of details that you want and I will forward them to you.

Travis

P.S What type of strings do you use? IMO you have to use pure nickel with a single coil strat or you get really tinny high end. I use Snake Oils Vintage Formula, and I tried to use some GHS Boomers (broke one at work, didn't have any spares, so the boss gave me a free set), and they sucked ass, I ripped them off the same day and put more Snakeoils on.

The MK Strat is Swamp Ash. You have to factor that in. Tht

yes it's swamp hash but it's a great guitar.
i didn't love the texas special at all so i changed them for more vintage type pu's (57/62 first and now 69') .

today i played it with a TAD deluxe tweed clone i built , with their stock parts that are already really good (US high hend transformers, orange drop 715p, mojotone cab and chassis ...) + an original mint P12Q ; it sounds great !

i will install some MM trannies and paper in oil caps to compare as the sprague are said a bit harsh so i didn't thought they would sound that good !

yesterday i sold my 98' strat standard to a young guy (18) , he was blown away with the sound through that deluxe tweed.
he bought the strat directly (a good sounding modern strat anyway but lacking a bit some mids compare to the vintage style ones, especialy as having the "swimming pool "pu's cavity!)

but the mark knopfler sounds more vintage with more mids ; really great through this amp and not harsh !
but i suppose i can get better pu's.

anyway, i will buy another strat, the problem is that they are way too much expensive here in france (i mean the custom shop vintage ri's and they have very little choice of guitars) ) and i'm a bit fed up buying guitars without beeing able to listen to them even if i had been very lucky with all the ones i bought from USA untill now !

If possible, i recommend a home built one using good parts. After doing this once, I doubt I could be happy buying just a reissue (Unless its an MIJ 68' with upgraded electronics. 8) ).

yes, i'd love to build one but i'm afriad it's much work !
i suppose parts don't fit exactly the first time you put them together, so you have to do several adjustments...
i build amps but lutherie is another job , although there it's more assembling than lutherie but it must be nice to build your own guitar !

i have to take a look !

do they look as beautiful as a nice NOS fender reissue custom shop ?
