Help me make a decision

Post by Billy Batz » Mon Feb 25, 2008 4:28 pm

No, Im not going to buy an expensive guitar based solely on this, but I will take it into account. Im at either extreme. Most of the gear I have Ive bought very impulsively. Other times ll research a piece of gear for years before I get one (tho the act of finally getting it is usually still uber-impulsive 8) ).

The 59 Historics are still very tempting to me. I half feel Ive played LPs for a while so I want to get something different but I also feel like to finally own a really nice LP would be it. I have an excellent Epi Custom thats all mahag with a rosewood board that has a darker woodier quality then the Gib Customs Im used to, which isnt good or bad, but probably more like a 'regular' LP but I cant say thats definitely what Im wanting.

The cream historic SG customs are sweet as hell. Theyve been a lustful pipe dream for a long time.

Ive heard so many good things about Hamers I have to include those.

Whadayou guys think?

Im leanin there buddy. I did something early this afternoon I havent done in a loooooong time. I set foot in a GC. I cant say the 'cooler then you' sales guys annoyed me at all. They were cool (lol) but I played all the Historics I could lay hands on. Those guys sense the blood in the water when they know someone is serious about getting a nice guitar. They had a 3 pickup SG and it was very nice but it didnt have the lyre vibrola which I was real interested in tryin and that guitar was actually pretty abused from people playing it anyway. Plus it had some kinda super slack tuning. Someone was playing nu-metal riffs with it.

The best guitar I ever owned was a Hamer Sunburst...she was a 79' model and I still dream about her...LOL!! Still kicking myself for letting it go...
Seriously, you should look into a very good older one... if you are giving Hamer a thought. I haven't played any new ones lately, but if they are building them like the old ones, I have a hunch you'll agree.

The only thing I don't like about 3 humbucker guitars is that I always hit the middle pickup with the pick.

Yeha that was the one thing I was thiking about but I figure I can make the pickup flush with the ring. I probably wouldnt ever use that one anyway.

Theres something that always made me uncomfortable with SGs about the lack of girth around the end of the fretboard. Its like that small space where the neck ends and the body starts seems like half way to a Steinberger. Other then that they play and feel awesome. The only thing that worries me with Hamers is that I have no chance to try one. It would be a blind choice though I think Id trust Hamer to consisntently make a great guitar more then I would Gibson.

+1 on that.

If I were buying with this intention, I would get a '58 Historic reissue. The reason I would go for a '58 and NOT a '59 is because other than the color (which I prefer the '58's anyway), and a somewhat chunkier neck on the '58, they are the same exact guitar, except the '58 is at least 1k cheaper than a '59.
Its the general concensus that '59's have better tops than '58's, BUT... I've seen '58 reissues that have REALLY nice tops on 'em. A 10 top by anybodys standards. Plus, they do have that little bit of a bigger neck, which I would always welcome.

(well, thats my two cents worth...  )

I think I meant 58. Im not interested in looks. I dont care about a plain top.

Only more time clocked in GC will tell how annoying the 3rd pup will be so that may come to nix that choice, maybe not.
