My guess is either swamp ash or northern hard ash. If it was northern hard ash, it would be noticeably heavy. Swamp is usually pretty light weight.
Oak is just about never used in guitar building, except for those really bad '80's Peaveys. I've never heard of any builders offer it as an option.
(Also, the side grain of oak, like whats in the control cavity, looks different than that... the side grain of oak isnt as tightly spaced, or evenly spaced as the grain in that pic)

My first guitar was plywood ... I still have the body and it isn't that bad. In fact it sustains better than some of my other "plain wood" panks.45auto wrote:looks like plywood! hey, whatever sounds great!

it is noticeably heavy compared to my other strat style guitars. a friend gave me that body that he bought in the 80s it sat in his basement and then in my attic all these years and now it's my #1 yes, mister beasty!- i've been told that it was northern hard ash - but i've never confirmed it. doesn't make a difference to me as long as it sounds good - but it's nice to know what the hell yer talking about every once in a while so - i was just prepping for the opportunity.fillmore nyc wrote:My guess is either swamp ash or northern hard ash. Yeah, if its unusually heavy, its almost definitely northern hard ash. Like you said, who gives a shit what its made of, as long as it sounds good. That northern ash tends to sustain and bite like a mutha, and there's nothing wrong with that!!rgalpin wrote: it is noticeably heavy compared to my other strat style guitars. a friend gave me that body that he bought in the 80s it sat in his basement and then in my attic all these years and now it's my #1 yes, mister beasty!- i've been told that it was northern hard ash - but i've never confirmed it. doesn't make a difference to me as long as it sounds good - but it's nice to know what the hell yer talking about every once in a while so - i was just prepping for the opportunity.
