i wonder what are the taper used for the original 50's and 60's gibson's and historic / VOS Les Paul and SG reissues volume and tone pots ?
i thought the volume pot was linear and the tone pot was log (audio taper) , both 500K but when i look on the web, i mostly find audio taper for both tone and volume pots.
i replaced some pots in a SG61 RI and put a linear volume pot but it doesn't seem to be the same taper as before !
on my 59' les paul ri's, i have most of the volume coming at the end (log ?) of my volume pot (between 7 and 10) but now on my SG 61 ri it seems more even (linear !) all along whereas i prefer to have it at the end as it's easier to use when i play.
in a way it seems logical a lin pot has a lin feeling but i was not sure as if i'm correct audio loudness isn't linear .
where can i buy some good pots (short and long shaft) for a reasonable price ?
RS guitarwork, allparts... ?
what tone/vol pot taper for historic/VOS Les Paul & SG '

Supposedly, early Gibsons used 300k linear for volume, and 500k audio for tone. I spoke to Edwin Wilson, who runs Gibsons Custom/Art/Historic division, so this comes from him.electricskychurch wrote:i wonder what are the taper used for the original 50's and 60's gibson's and historic / VOS Les Paul and SG reissues volume and tone pots ?

RS, and also Mojo carries stuff like this. Also, you can get this as pre-packaged parts by Gibson, but its the same shit RS and Mojo sells, just without the Gibson logo (and without the Gibson price)

I would go with the Dr.Vintage set, even though he can be somewhat opinionated, aren't we all, he has done his homework and his 500K pre-wired set, has perfect taper and he has studied many, many vintage pots and researched this.I have heard of complaints about RS, but never his, tell him I sent you..

i have never heard or read the original 50's/60's gibson's were using 300k pots, always 500k .
from what i know, gibsons started using 300k vol pot from the 70's or even 80's; i'm very surprised by what this guy from the custom shop told you !
i won't buy pre- wired pots as they usualy sell for vey expensive compare to what you pay for the parts.
Jim proposed me some pre wired pots as well but it's 110-115 $ !

I put RS Guitarworks Vintage pot and harness kit in my Lester and the difference is night/day over Gibson stuff. RS matches all their pots which to me makes a big difference in not only the tone but how the pot reacts to roll-on and roll-offs. Also, with the Vintage kit you get the Jensen tone, caps i.e. .022 bridge & .015 for neck respectfully, which to me are as good as the high dollar Bumblebee's. The wire harness that comes with the RS kit is all shielded and is the best. The guys at Les Paul Forum sware by the RS kits. This is what my Lester's contols look like after I installed and wired the RS Vintage kit to 59 specs myself. In 1977 Gibson made the change from the short shaft to long shaft pots and I beleive they changed for a short while to 300k pots but quickly went back to the 500k. Typically it's 500k for gibson having the Humbuckers and 250k for Fender with single coils.

Its funny, cause I never questioned that he knew what he was talking about, and if Im not mistaken, the Historic LP's come with the same pot values. Edwin Wilson is the head guy at the Gibson CS, so I was grateful to be able to pick his brain. I've used these pot values in a couple of LP's, and they sound good to my ear.
