Got strong, want sweet

Post by gtomax » Sun Apr 27, 2008 8:39 pm

Just put some WCR pups in my Les Paul - a DB/GW set (alnico 5 and 2 respectively). The tone is great, very strong and clear. I want something that sounds a bit sweeter. I don't really know how else to describe what I'm looking for... just something a little rounder maybe? It's real rock right now. Maybe I need to just mess around with amp settings...

Any ideas as to what might sweeten it up a bit?

Swapping out the Alnico V for Alnico II magnet will soften the one up a bit. Slightly degaussing the magnets, lowering the pickup adjustment screws flush with the pickup bobbin, and lowering the overall pickup will help. Increasing the tone cap value to something in the .030-.035 range will help. Going to 300K pots (if you are running 500k) will help. Amp settings (dial down the middle and treble, up the bass) will help.

you can add a 1M resistor between the outside lus on your control pot to turn it into a 300K pot as well... might be a liitle easier and less expensive to try this first and see if you like the change....
