In the next week or two I plan on splurging for an SG... what can someone tell me about the P-90 version? I played on briefly but through a VOX... I am using Metro's... I will either be getting the P-90 or the humbuckers... any insight is greatly appreciated...

You can have P90s, single coils and humbucker. Fits where a humbucker fits. and Sounds great.

If I were buying a SG, I would consider the Historics. They make a 61 SG Special RI (P90s) and a 62 Standard SG RI, either comes in Cherry or TV yellow! The Standard can be had with or without the Lyre Vibrola. But then again if I were getting a Les Paul with P90s, I would probably get (and have gotten) a Historic Les Paul DC Special R0 in TV.

thanks for the replies! are these the same p90's that come with the LP Custom shop special? I loved the way george's sounded when I played it... also, the price difference is about $300 (P90 version is cheaper) Is this a case of you get what you pay for? The P90 I can get for about $800 and the Humbucker version goes for about 1,100???

You know I am not sure about if all P90s are the same with Gibson (I can only assume they are) The USA SG Standard 61 RIs have 57 Classics and the Historic SG Standard 62 RIs have Burstbuckers, but as far as the P90 guitars, I THINK they are all the same pickup?

So what exact model SGs are you considering? USA models, I assume, at those prices!!

Just went to Gibson's site and it seems they only make one P90. Also I could not find a P90 on the Gibson USA site, the SG Special has open coil Humbuckers. The only SG I could find with P90s is the Historic SG Special:

Here is the p90 version: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/ ... sku=517127

Here is the Humbucker: version: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/ ... sku=517260

Looks like I could get them both for about the same price... I thought there was a price difference but apparently not.... The guy I know at the local guitar store usually beats musician's friend by 20-25%... btw... would you be up for winding me up some P90's, Rod?

Oh, I forgot about the SG Classic!! The other one is the same one I saw on the Gibson USA site. I have not looked into P90s or Fender pups at this point. I am still struggling to get the word out on my PAFs!!!!

I emailed you a link to an Ebay auction of a Historic SG Standard 62 RI.

Thanks for the link... I typically shy away from buying guitars on ebay without playing them UNLESS someone I know can personally vouch for the seller... I have read too many horror stories and I know how my luck usually pans out! :x :x

You would have been dissapointed in the modern Gibson P90's anyway Gutpile, so just as well. The Pete Townshend limited tribute model from a few years back, must be the ultimate SG, but good score on the '61, best year and model other than the Ro$$ington SG. .
