Does anyone have any experience with a S.D. 1/4 pounder in a tele?

I want to fatten up the bridge tone, almost equaling a P-90. Do you think this would work?

I used a tapped version in my tele. Definitely a fat tone, fatter than a P-90. No tele twang left whatsoever. I no longer have it.

For a good fat p-90 like tone Haeussel's Big Mag is a good choice. See www.haeussel.com.

A pretty good pickup for the sound you're looking for (and not a lot of coin) is a DiMarzio Pre-B1 (DP-112) tele. According to DiMarzio, its 25% stronger than a regular Tele pickup. I had one in a Jap tele copy, and it was real nice. Everybody that ever played that guitar commented on how good it sounded. It still retains "some" twang, but much more bottom end and punch, plus its not brittle sounding at all. P-90-ish for sure.

(A little hint, that the people at DiMarzio didnt like to hear: I added the metal bottom plate to that pup (it doesnt come with one), and it sounded even better--more bottom than it already had.)
I told DiMarzio that I did that, and they were like "You cant do that"!! Ummm, yeah I can, and maybe you should too cause it sounds better that way!!
They said the same shit when I told 'em that I replaced the mag in a "Fred" pickup... "HEY!! You cant do that!!" Well, it sounds better, so why not?? Maybe ye should try it dere, brudda!!


(Just BTW, another DiMarzio worth considering is the Virtual Hot-T (DP413). Its close to a P-90 as well, and its hum cancelling. I have one in my parts-tele, and I love it.)

That's funny about the DiMarzio employee comments, I called DiMarzio to return a pick up that I had tried within their return policy period and they gave me some flack about it. They asked if I tried using a 1M pot with the pickup (Virtual Vintage) and I told them I left the 500K in there, they told me "you need to have a 1M pot in the guitar to use with that pick up" I told them that I didn't NEED one for my Seymour Duncan hum cancelling single coil. The guy goes, "They don't have a stacked hum canceling single coil". They seem very uneducated when it comes to their competition, except for the fact of when their competition is using their color!!!

Yeah, honestly whenever I've had to deal with them they've always been a bunch of dick heads. Their business is not far from NYC (Staten Island), and I've gone there to get pickup covers from them directly. It is in the worst shit-hole neighborhood you could ever imagine, in a filthy, run down little building. What a hole!! And whenever you ask them something, they look at you like you're speaking a foreign language!!
Its really amazing that they act like they're doing YOU a favor by taking your money, and GOD FORBID you should ask the wizards there a question!!

(Its a good thing they make a half-decent pickup for the money... they're NO Lindy Fralin or WCR's, but for my money, they beat the shit out of Duncans)

I was at a local music store this weekend and I tried the "new production model" Charvel, one had Duncans and the other Dimarzio's. The duncan guitar blew the Dimarzio guitar away. I was impressed with it. I may even have to pick one up.

But your right, the Fralins (which I have) and WCR (which I've played) are the shitz!!

I guess it depends which Duncan and which DiMarzio you're comparing. To my ear, Duncans sound flat and lifeless, and that goes for just about any of them I've tried. Its not like DiMarzios are killers or anything, but again, to my ear they sound better than Duncans.

Staten Island is kinda like Long Island in a way. You live "on" it, not "in" it...

Manhattan is an island, but you live IN Manhattan, not ON Manhattan...

The Duncan Charvel has a JB bridge and 59 neck.

The DiMarzio Charvel has Tone Zone bridge and evolution neck.

I changed all my gibsons out for duncans about 8 years ago, then switched back to the gibsons. I ran the DiMarzio air nortons for a while then switched back to Gibson again and for the most part I've been running BB2 +3's in my les pauls and a set of fralin P-90's in my GOW #14 Les Paul and my special. I have a combo of Duncans and Dimarzio's in my strats. They seem to work for my needs right now.

The JB is probably one of D's best sounding pup's, and IMO, that Tone Zone is a piece of dog shit. Im not familiar with the Evo though. I didnt like the DiMarzio Fred either, until I changed the Al 5 mag for an AL 2 mag. Then it sounded pretty decent.

What did you think of the Air Norton, and did you use it in the neck or bridge? Thats a pup I've always been curious about, but have never tried.

Love my JB's, love my DiMarzio Hs-3 and YJM's, I would say some of each manufacturer are better than others. Let's not forget DiMarzio was the king of the super distortion, all you Kiss fans know that!
I am loving P-90's and Strat single coils more in my olde age though..

I liked them. I can't tell you why, they just worked for the stuff I was doing at the time.(classic rock w/master volume Marshall) I used it in the bridge. Send me your address and I'll send you one. If you like it, keep it.
