Hello friends, I just got a malmsteen strat. THe neck is aligned good, E strings both equal distance from the edge of fretboard. Have any of you noticed a tendancy to pull the high e off the fretboard when fretting in the upper register? I think it is because there is no wood underneath my fingers to kinda put the "brakes on" before it slips off. Just wondering if this is common when going to a scalloped neck and will just take a little technique change. Thanks

I got two. Great guitars.
As your's, I got my E-string/neck alighnment perfect.
IMO, the high E slipping off is as you say, the fact that there is no wood there, due to the scallops.

I just play around it, and you can bet Yngwie does with an .008 high E tuned to e-flat.

a tighter E string, say a .010 slips less

Hi planetjimi, well again trumped by carly, I only have one YJM Strat, but I recognize the issue you are having. This is the way these guitars feel, the high E string feels as if it is coming off the board and it can easily. I play with the .008 E tuned to E-flat and play around it. But I can tell you I love the configuration of these guitars, but my next seventies style Strat will have a 7.25" radius flat board. The 2007 and up YJM's have the deeper scallops and a slightly different neck profile, mine is a 2004 I special ordered from Fender. I like the scalloped necks but not being a professional guitarist like some here...I don't play the scalloped neck that often to be extremely proficient.
Then again there is only one Yngwie and nobody plays or sounds like him, even with the same guitar.

Thanks for the input. It's a new guitar, I was wondering if maybe the frets were beveled too much on the high e side. It's good to here that what im experiencing is "normal".

Hi planetjimi, l own two Malmsteen 2008 Models. I dont have the problem with the string slipping off the fret board on the high E string on the upper register. Its all about technique and having your hand parallel to the neck and learn to play lightly. Use a soft approach and relax your arm and hand, you will notice if you are too tense you will get tired and fatigue quickly. Just practise this approached it used by many Classical Guitarists out there when learning technique and holding the instrument. I have used this technique as l am classical trained and its worth the long haul.
